Last weekend brought an unexpected shift in the Nigerian film industry’s box office landscape. “Adire“, starring the talented Kehinde Bankole, made its much-anticipated theatrical debut and achieved an impressive ₦8 million in its opening weekend.
The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) reported that from October 3 to 5, 2023, “Adire” secured the third spot on the Nigerian box office charts. This outstanding performance has brought the film into the spotlight, resonating with moviegoers.
“Adire” is a captivating drama centred around the life of a young female fashion entrepreneur, portrayed by Kehinde Bankole. The character grapples with a haunting past as a sex worker, and the film explores the repercussions of her former life.
The multi-talented Jack’enneth Opukeme, who also takes on the role of an actor, exclusively crafted and penned the story of “Adire”.
Directed by Adeoluwa Owu, also known as Captain Degzy, the film features an exceptional cast, including Femi Branch, Kelechi Udegbe, Funlola Aofiyebi-Raimi, Ibrahim Chatta, Yemi Blaq, Yvonne Jegede, Lizzy Jay, Mike Afolarin, Tomi Ojo, Damilola Ogunsi, Onyinye Odokoro, Ifeanyi Kalu, and Layi Wasabi. The latest box office rankings show “Adire” surpassing “Small Talk” by Biodun Stephen, which was in the third position last week but now holds the fourth position with ₦3.8 million.
In a surprising turn of events, “Merry Men” has dropped from the top spot to the second position with a weekend gross of ₦10.7 million. The American action film “Freelance“, with a gross of ₦13.2 million, has taken the first position after three weeks of Merry Men’s reign.
Since its debut on October 13, 2023, the third movie in the “Merry Men” franchise by Ay Makun has accumulated a total gross of ₦94.8 million. It continues to be screened in cinemas nationwide alongside other films like “Adire” and “Small Talk”.
