Instagram to show users time spent in app

Instagram is getting a new “Usage Insights” tool that would help users see how much time they spent in the social media app, according to a discovery from app researcher Jane Manchun Wong.

Wong, found the feature hidden in the code of Instagram’s Android app (via TechCrunch), according to The Verge.com.

Kevin Systrom, Instagram CEO has now tweeted a link to this article with a confirmation that Instagram is building this Usage Insights feature.

“It’s true . . . We’re building tools that will help the IG community know more about the time they spend on Instagram – any time should be positive and intentional . . .

“Understanding how time online impacts people are important and it’s the responsibility of all companies to be honest about this.

We want to be part of the solution. I take that responsibility seriously.” This article has been updated to reflect the confirmation.

It sounds like Instagram is willing to endure a potential reduction in usage and ad views to be served the mental health of its community.

That’s an admirable pledge, and we’ll see what degree of transparency Instagram rolls out.

By being upfront with users about how much of their lives they’re investing in their favorite apps, tech giants could encourage people to adopt healthier habits and avoid the long, passive, anti-social browsing sessions that can harm their well-being.

These features could also help parents keep track of what their kids are doing online.

Both might lead people to spend less time on certain apps, but they could be happier with companies like Instagram.

The Usage Insights screenshot and “time spent” code were discovered by prolific app investigator Jane Manchun Wong inside the Instagram for Android application package, or “APK”.

She wrote, “Be self-aware or be prepared to be ashamed for Instagram addiction”.

When asked by TechCrunch for more evidence about how the feature worked, she tweeted screenshot above of Instagram’s code that shows “slideout_menu_time_spent” element.

Aliyu Aminu isn’t your average guy. This 31-year-old whiz from northern Nigeria is shaking things up in the fast-paced world of technology. He’s not just following the crowd; he’s charting a brand-new course full of exciting possibilities.

The talented software developer from Katsina State, who lives in Zaria, Kaduna, just launched a game-changing app called Gistoneer. This app is shaking things up for radio stations and anyone who creates content in Africa. Gistoneer lets creators share their shows (in mp3 format) after they’ve aired.

Aliyu Aminu himself explained the app’s features to Arewa PUNCH shortly after a presentation at a recent event in Kaduna. He talked about how Gistoneer benefits all kinds of users. According to him, anyone can use it.

He stated that the app allows all users to share their favorite photographs, audio, and videos, make playlists, and interact with friends and family.

“The app is a game-changing application that empowers content creators, artists, and everyday users to connect with their audience in new and innovative ways,” he said.

Gistoneer is a platform that integrates user-friendly features with monetization potential, transforming the African and global digital content environments. It offers free mp3, mp4, and image-sharing social networking services, with the intention of expanding the services beyond music. One of its most appealing features is the Creator Fund, which pays users who have created a large following.

Aminu mentioned that one of the most appealing parts of Gistoneer is the Creator Fund, which pays users who have created a large following.

Gistoneer’s Creator Fund dashboard gets activated when an account reaches 10k followers and receives 100k views in 30 days. Users can earn money through this dashboard, monetizing their content and increasing their revenue stream. The frequency of Gistoneer material determines the revenue generated, encouraging users to upload engaging content. Gistoneer also permits posting mp3-format files of shows for fans to listen to or download later.

Gistoneer is poised to transform the African and global digital content environments by integrating user-friendly features with monetization potential.
