Lagos State Enforces Ban On Street Trading

The Lagos State Task Force on Environment and Special Offences under the directives of The Governor of Lagos state, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode promised to commence a total enforcement on the band of street trading in the metropolis from today 4^th July. Over the weekends Governor Ambode directed law enforcement agencies to commence a total enforcement against street trading and street hawkers from July 1, 2016, saying that the law banning their activities across the metropolis would take its full course.

The governor said that the enforcement is in line with with Section I of the Lagos State Street Trading and Illegal Market Prohibition Law 2003 which restricts street trading and hawking in the metropolis.

Going through the major roads and high ways of the metropolis, the absence of the normal presence of street hawkers , individuals peddling their items can be noticed.

The death of a street hawker last week, as he tried to evade arrest by Metropolitan police hastened the resolve of the State government to enforce the law against street hawking despite resistance by some traders that their livelihoods were being taken away, however Governor Ambode in an interview sympathized with the family of a street hawker, and regretted that the incident not only lead to the death of an individual but the destruction of public assets.

Consequently, Ambode said the state Executive Council has resolved to enforce the Law, which according to him makes both the hawker and the buyer liable of the offense.

Idris Elba to relocate to Africa to support its film industry | fab.ng

British actor, Idris Elba has revealed his plans to relocate to Africa within the next decade. Motivated by a desire to contribute to the continent’s film industry, Elba expressed his intentions at a film industry event in Ghana. Interestingly, Elba has Ghanaian and Sierra Leonean heritage.

As part of his vision to bolster African filmmaking, Elba teased upcoming projects. This involves the establishment of film studios in Zanzibar, Tanzania, and Accra, Ghana.

“I would certainly consider settling down here; not even consider, it’s going to happen, I think I’ll move in the next five, 10 years, God willing. I’m here to bolster the film industry – that is a 10-year process – I won’t be able to do that from overseas. I need to be in-country, on the continent,” he said.

Idris Elba had previously hinted at his involvement in a TV series adaptation. Consequently, the series is Chinua Achebe’s acclaimed novel, Things Fall Apart. Elba expressed his intention to portray the main character, Okonkwo.

While this announcement sparked concerns among Nigerians, Elba emphasized his commitment. He would use his platform to advance the African film industry.

“I’m here to bolster the film industry—that is a 10-year process. I won’t be able to do that from overseas. I need to be in-country, on the continent,” he said.

He emphasized that staying in one location would limit his freedom. So, he refuses to confine to a single place.

“I’m going to live in Accra, I’m going to live in Freetown Sierra Leone’s capital, I’m going to live in Zanzibar. I’m going to try and go where they’re telling stories – that’s really important,” he added.

Finally, he concluded by emphasising the need to correct wrong narratives about Africa held by non-Africans.

“If you watch any film or anything that has got to do with Africa, all you’re going to see is trauma, how we were slaves, how we were colonised, how it’s just war and when you come to Africa, you will realise that it’s not true. So, it’s really important that we own those stories of our tradition, of our culture, of our languages, of the differences between one language and another. The world doesn’t know that,” he concluded.

Falz Replies Verydarkman On Their Ongoing Issue | fab.ng

Falz, a prominent Nigerian rapper, has finally addressed the defamation case against social media personality Verydarkman (VDM). Verydarkman had made false allegations, claiming that Falz and his father, Femi Falana, had helped Bobrisky evade money laundering charges.

In a recent episode of the Afrobeats Podcast, Falz recounted his conversation with VDM following the release of the defamatory video.

He said,

“This guy was instantly defensive from the beginning; I’m like bro, try and listen. What are you instantly fighting about? And he said to me, without minding words, ‘shebi you’re a lawyer; go to court.'”

“I’ll have you know that there’s a criminal angel to defamation, and I chose not to go that way. He could have very well been arrested. What you’ve posted is a load of bollocks, absolutely false and I need you to take it down and offer an apology within a certain amount of time and what did he do? Nothing,” he added.

Falz emphasized that he had no personal issues with VDM until the social media personality defamed his father.

“I no dey find trouble Baba, I dey my dey. You set your ring light and begin dey talk all this nonsense about me, and you expect me to sit down? He trampled on every single thing my father stood for, sticking out his neck for the oppressed. So this level of disrespect ? See our people say that any child who says that his mother would not sleep, he himself would not sleep,” he said.

Definitively, he added, “So if you say you want to find trouble, trouble is my work; it’s my work. If you say that’s what you’re looking for, let’s go.”

The controversy began on September 24, 2024. This was when VDM released an alleged voicetape of Bobrisky claiming that a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and his son had helped him avoid money laundering charges.

VDM apparently accused Falz and his father, Femi Falana, of being involved in Bobrisky’s ordeal. He also alleged a potential relationship between Falz and Bobrisky.

Following the backlash on social media, Falz issued a statement. He demanded VDM to retract the video and apologize within 24 hours. However, VDM refused to apologize. He insisted that he had not defamed Falz or his father and expressing his readiness to face legal action.

On October 15, 2024, the Lagos High Court ordered VDM to retract his defamatory statements against the Falana family, but he failed to comply.

“The Uprising: Wives on Strike 3” generated ₦10 million in voucher sales within its first two days of release.

The filmmakers introduced this innovative voucher system before the movie’s premiere, enabling audiences to secure their tickets in advance.
