There’s confusion surrounding the situation of Nollywood actor Jnr Pope Odonwodo after a drowning incident on set. Reports suggest he drowned in a boat accident while filming in Asaba, the Delta State capital, on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.
Multiple sources reported his death, sharing videos of what appeared to be his lifeless body. However, Emeka Rollas, the national president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), announced late on Wednesday that the actor was responding to medical treatment.
“What God cannot do does not exist. Junior Pope is alive. He is taking treatment in the hospital,” he posted on Instagram. But he removed the post just 30 minutes later, adding to the confusion…
Sadly, two other people who were working on the movie also drowned. Nobody knows their names yet, and there hasn’t been any news about them since it happened.
This accident took place just a few hours after the actor, Pope, posted a video on Instagram. In the video, he was riding a boat made of wood without wearing a life jacket. It seems like this boat ride was for a scene in the movie.
“See me lamenting. The risk we take to entertain you. Crossing river 9ja yesterday with no life jacket. Na wahoooooo. Who does that?” Jnr Pope captioned the video.

In March, Nollywood suffered even more losses. Three prominent actors died that month. Popular Yoruba actor Sisi Quadri passed away on March 1st after a short illness. The very next day, beloved comedian Mr. Ibu (John Okafor) died. Later in March, on the 24th, veteran actor Amaechi Muonagor also passed away, following a long battle with health problems.
