Tems sets new Spotify record for a Nigerian female artist | Fab.ng

Nigerian music star Tems just released her debut album, “Born In The Wild,” on June 7th, 2024. It’s setting the world on fire! On that day, Tems shattered the record for a Nigerian female artist on Spotify. She reached 8 million streams. This accomplishment dethroned her record of 5.33 million streams for her album’s opening day, placing her as runner-up to Ayra Starr’s recent album.

Tems’ meteoric rise began with her feature on Wizkid’s global smash hit “Essence” in 2021.

“Born In The Wild” is a sprawling 18-track journey. It features collaborations with Nigerian superstar Asake and acclaimed American rapper J. Cole. To prime fans for the album’s release, Tems dropped two incredibly popular singles, “Me & U” and “Love Me Jeje,” which have already amassed millions of streams each. The phenomenal success of these singles is a testament to her status as a global music force, and “Born In The Wild” is on track to be a commercial juggernaut.

Furthermore, Tems’ achievements extend far beyond the realm of her chart-topping debut album. She’s a history-maker in the Nigerian music industry. In 2022, she became the first Nigerian female artist to win a Grammy Award. She was recognised for Best Melodic Rap Performance on Future’s hit “Wait For U,” featuring her and Drake.

Her talents aren’t limited to the music world; Tems also holds the distinction of being the first Nigerian artist to be nominated for an Oscar, thanks to her contributions to the soundtrack for the highly anticipated Marvel superhero film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”

A Fully Realised Debut

Dropping on June 7, 2024, “Born In The Wild” isn’t just a collection of songs; it’s a meticulously crafted 18-track experience. Interspersed with two interludes, the album promises a diverse soundscape sure to keep listeners captivated.

Tems isn’t going solo on this sonic journey, though. Afrobeats heavyweight Asake and American rap icon J. Cole lend their talents to guest appearances, adding even more flavour to the mix.

Familiar tracks get a fresh look

Tems has already whetted fans’ appetites with some pre-release singles. “Me & U,” a powerful declaration of love and loyalty, has garnered critical acclaim and even scored two nominations for the prestigious 2024 BET Awards.

“Love Me Jeje,” a playful and infectious song, samples a classic track by Seyi Sodimu and Shaffy Bello, showcasing Tems’ respect for her musical heritage while adding a fresh, modern twist.

For those who can’t wait for the full album release, Tems has been offering tantalising glimpses of “Born In The Wild” during live performances.

Fans tuning into NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series were treated to a stripped-down rendition of “Unfortunate,” while viewers of The Tonight Show star Jimmy Fallon got to witness the electrifying energy of “Love Me Jeje.” These live performances are a testament to the raw emotion and captivating energy Tems pours into her music.

From rising star to global phenomenon

“Born In The Wild” isn’t just an album; it’s the culmination of Tems’ remarkable journey. This isn’t her first foray into the music world. “Born In The Wild” follows her critically acclaimed 2022 EP “If Orange Was A Place,” showcasing her artistic growth and evolution.
