Shortly after the intense game between Nigeria and South Africa, Cote d’Ivoire battled it out with DR Congo at Alassane Ouattara Stadium, Abidjan, and emerged successful.
The hosts secured their place in the ongoing AFCON tournament with a narrow 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo. This win is a remarkable turnaround for the host nation, whose journey has been one of resilience and dramatic comebacks. After a shaky group stage that saw them nearly eliminated, Cote d’Ivoire entered the knockout rounds with a renewed sense of purpose. They defied the odds, overcoming Senegal in a penalty shootout and producing a last-gasp equaliser and extra-time win against Mali in the quarterfinals.
DR Congo also played some impressive football throughout the tournament, notably coming from behind to win 3-1 against Guinea and secure a place in the semi-finals. However, they were unable to unlock the Ivorian defence and will have to settle for a third-place playoff.
The encounter between Cote d’Ivoire and DR Congo proved equally tense. Both sides displayed moments of brilliance. However, chances were few and far between in the opening half, with neither side able to truly test the goalkeepers. It was in the 35th minute that the game became more intense. Cote d’Ivoire found spaces in the DR Congo defence, and the match gained more acceleration. They became more dangerous and even reached the sixth shot in the first half.

Despite late pressure from DR Congo, the Ivorians held firm, their defence marshalled by the experienced Serge Aurier, to secure a hard-fought victory.
