Ivory Coast roared to victory on home soil, lifting the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations trophy after a thrilling 2-1 win against Nigeria in the final. This marks their third continental title, adding to their previous wins in 1992 and 2015. The Elephants, who had their backs against the wall earlier in the tournament, showed incredible fighting spirit to overcome the Super Eagles. The game was a tense affair, but Sebastian Haller’s clever finish in the 81st minute sealed the deal for Ivory Coast.
Nigeria, despite a strong performance, had to settle for second place. While the Nigerians fell short in the final, they still had a strong showing. Meanwhile, South Africa and DR Congo rounded out the top four. South Africa pulled off a penalty shootout victory over Congo to claim their best AFCON finish in 24 years. This marks their best performance in the competition since 2000.
Ghana, the mighty Black Stars with four AFCON titles under their belt, had a disappointing performance. They finished near the very bottom of the tournament’s final rankings. Ghana’s hopes of glory in the 24-team tournament were dashed early on, as they stumbled out of the competition in the very first round without managing a single victory. They finished in 18th place overall.
Their journey started rough, with a 1-2 defeat to Cape Verde. They tried to bounce back with draws against Egypt and Mozambique, but both ended 2-2, leaving them short of the points needed to advance. This early exit left many Ghanaian fans heartbroken.
The Black Stars only managed to score five goals in the entire tournament, but they also let in six. They were so close to moving on to the next round. But in the very last few seconds of their final game against Mozambique, they gave up two goals. That meant they were knocked out of the competition.
