5 Ways Young People Can Reduce Chances Of High Blood Pressure

As Africans, we are two times more likely to develop high blood pressure by the age of 55 than white people are. This is according to a study which also discovered that high blood pressure patients can be as young as 30.

Certain risk factors, such as obesity and having a family history of the condition, make a person more likely to suffer high blood pressure.

If you’re waiting till you’re older to start taking measures to prevent high blood pressure, you may be too late. The earlier you start, the better for you.

Here are a few lifestyle changes to adopt that can significantly reduce your chances of having high blood pressure, now or down the line:

Maintain a healthy weight: Your blood pressure increases as your weight increases. So when you control your weight, you control your BP.

  • Avoid salty meals: Avoid eating a lot of processed foods as they contain a high amount of salt. Also gradually cut down on how much salt you use when preparing your meals.
  • Reduce stress: You can’t completely eliminate stress but there are things you can do to cut down. Try focusing more on things you can control, don’t put too much pressure on yourself
  • and make time to relax.

  • Exercise: If you already have an elevated blood pressure, regular exercises may prevent it from escalating to hypertension. Consider aerobic exercises like walking, jogging, cycling, swimming or dancing.
  • Eat healthy: Go for whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy product and cut down on foods that contain saturated fats and cholesterol.

It’s also important that you see a doctor for regular blood pressure check or you can monitor it at home by investing in a portable blood pressure device..
