Foods to avoid when you are over 40 include those that can increase your risk for disease or worsen conditions you already have.
If you are over 40, you may have noticed that you just can’t eat or drink like you did when you were younger. As you age, it is even more important to eat well, maintain a healthy weight, and get regular exercise, not just to feel better but to prevent disease as well.
Your risk for heart disease, high cholesterol, cancer, prostate problems like enlarged prostate (BPH), gout, arthritis, and diabetes goes up as you get older.
Testosterone levels start to decline, and the wrong foods can send your hormones out of balance. Limiting the foods to avoid over 40 is going to help you maximize your health by keeping your blood sugar in check, reducing inflammation, and keeping your cardiovascular system running smoothly.
So here are foods you should not eat once you clock 40, and reasons why you should avoid them.
Baked foods
Baked foods and other sweets are often rich in added sugars and fat, which can lead to weight gain and poor dental health. Sugar promotes an unhealthy microbiome and it’s also pro-inflammatory. All of these characteristics can accelerate the aging process.
Hotdog/Sausage
Processed meats are high in sodium, saturated fats, and nitrate [a preservative], all of which may have a negative impact on health. High intake of processed meats has been linked with a greater chance of developing heart disease, diabetes, and stomach cancer—and we already have an increased risk of those diseases as we age. If you do select processed meats, opt for ones made without nitrates and choose lower fat, lower sodium varieties like chicken and snail meat.
Margarine
Some brands contain partially hydrogenated oils, which are trans fats. Since even just one to two grams per day of trans fats can have a negative impact on cholesterol and heart health, it’s best to avoid them. Instead, read labels carefully, or choose plant-based oils instead. Fresh avocados are a great substitution for margarine in baking and cooking and may help reduce intake of calories, saturated fat, sodium, and cholesterol.
Pasta
Refined and processed carbs, like pasta and many kinds of cereal, have a high glycemic index level. This means their high carb load rapidly spikes blood sugar and can be a contributing factor to heart disease, weight gain, and diabetes. In addition, they give you bad skin and acne.
French Fries
As you age, your slowing metabolism simply can’t handle the extra calories that come from greasy food like french fries. It contains properties that are contributing factors to bad skin.
Energy drinks
Drinks with a lot of sugar in them are bad. Drinks made with a sugar substitute are equally bad. Your teeth the first part of you that shows the signs of an energy-drink habit, as they can damage enamel and make it easier for stains to form on your teeth. What’s more, their high caffeine and sodium content can lead to dehydration, especially if you’re drinking them instead of water. Since dehydration is one of the main factors that contribute to older-looking skin, aim to drink the recommended 8-10 glasses of water per day—and even more, if you’re consuming alcohol or working out.
Excess Alcohol
A glass of wine, especially red wine, may actually benefit your health, but drinking excessively is bad for aging men. Too much alcohol can damage your liver, accelerate aging, and even lead to osteoporosis. Excess and regular drinking of alcohol dilates blood vessels in the skin, widening blood vessels until they lose tone. This can lead to deeper facial lines and wrinkles.
