These 8 Women Put Nigeria On The World Map In 2018

2018 has indeed been an amazing year, especially for women.

As we approach the end of the year we are taking time to appreciate all the amazing Nigerian women that have put the country on the map through their achievements and feats.

These hardworking women defied all odds to make an impact in the society while following their dreams.

Hauwa Ojeifo

Hauwa Ojeifo is a mental health activist and founder of She Writes Woman. This year Hauwa was one of the recipients of the Queen’s Young Leaders Award.

She was also one of the winners of the MTV EMA Generation Change Award. This award category was just introduced at the 2018 MTV EMAs

Njideka Akunyili Crosby

Njideka Akunyili Crosby, daughter of late Dora Akunyili is a multi-talented visual artist. This year Njideka sold one of her paintings “Bush Babies” for N1.2bn ($3.4million) a feat that hasn’t been achieved in a while.

Mo Abudu

Ebonylife TV boss, Mo Abudu is another woman putting Nigeria on the world map. It’s undeniable that the media mogul definitely had a great 2018.

This year, Mo made it to the 2018 UK 100 Power List alongside Meghan Markle. This list is the is the most authoritative recognition of influential people of African and Caribbean heritage in the UK. Recently, Mo was elected Director of International Academy of Televison, Arts and Sciences, the organisation responsible for staging the world famous Emmy Awards.

Abisoye Akinfolarin-Ajayi

Abisoye Ajayi-Akinfolarin is a Nigerian women’s rights activist and founder of Pearls Africa Youth Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organization aimed at educating young girls in under-served areas in Nigeria with technology skills.

This year, Abisoye became the first Nigerian to be named “CNN Hero Of The Year. She alongside nine others received the sum of $10,000 for their heroic feats.

Blessing Okagbare

Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteghonor is a  Nigerian track and field athlete who specializes in long jumping and short sprints. She is also an Olympic and World Championships medallist in the long jump and a world medalist in the 200 meters.

This year she set a new national record in the women’s 200m after running an impressive 22.04 seconds in the 200m race at the Wes Kittley Invitational Track and Field Meet at the Abilene Christian University.

Her feat erased the 200m women African record held by Mary Onyali-Omagbemi since August 1996.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie hands down had an amazing 2018. The renowned author kept bagging degrees and awards back to back. She also caused quite a stir on social media and we couldn’t love her less.

Adichie also had an amazing time gracing a number of magazine covers yet the one that topped them all was her cover shoot for PORT Magazine’s April 2018 Issue.

Chimamanda became the first woman ever to appear on the cover of PORT, which was launched in 2011 as “the magazine for men”.

Grace Ladoja

Grace Ladoja is the founder of Metallic Inc and manager of UK grime star Skepta. She is equally one of UK’s most promising media executives. The talent manager and the daughter of a former Oyo State governor, Rashidi Ladoja, was recently honored with an MBE  by His Royal Highness, Prince Charles.

Tiwa Savage

Tiwa definitely had an amazing 2018 despite all the relationship drama and scandals Tiwa Savage kept winning big. This year, Tiwa made history as the first female artist to win the award for the Best African Act at the 2018 MTV European Music Awards.

"Stop Pitting Me Against My Friends" – BNXN Warns Fans

Nigerian music star BNXN is putting a stop to online comparisons. Influencer-fueled debates about who the better singer is, BNXN or Ayra Starr, recently took social media by storm. But BNXN isn’t here for it. On May 13th, 2024, he took a stand on his social media platform, urging fans to ditch the comparisons and appreciate artists for their individual talents.

BNXN is a force to be reckoned with in the Nigerian music industry.

He is renowned for his music, and he’s consistently impressed audiences since bursting onto the scene. This isn’t the first time BNXN has encountered online comparisons. He clearly remembers the public feud with fellow singer Ruger that erupted after similar comparisons on social media.

Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed, and BNXN and Ruger ended their disagreement. They even collaborated on a successful EP titled “RnB,” featuring hits like “Romeo Must Die” and “Ilashe.” This proved that collaboration can be much more fruitful than competition.

Meanwhile, Ayra Starr seems unfazed by the online noise.

She’s laser-focused on the upcoming release of her highly anticipated sophomore album, “The Year I Turned 21,” expected to drop this May.

The Grammy-nominated artist recently unveiled “No Bad Vibe,” featuring Seyi Vibez, as the album’s lead single. But that’s not all! The full project boasts an impressive lineup of guest appearances, including Asake, Giveon, Coco Jones, Anitta, and even her brother Milar. This star-studded collaboration hints at the diversity fans can expect from the album.

So, it’s clear that both BNXN and Ayra Starr are prioritising making music for their fans, not getting caught up in online comparisons. Their dedication to their craft is evident, and their talent deserves to be celebrated individually.

Big Brother Naija “Shine Ya Eye” winner Whitemoney, also known as Hazel Oyeze Onou, recently explained why he skipped the 10th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).

The AMVCA took place on Saturday, with celebrities rocking stunning outfits on the red carpet at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos. Vee, for example, wowed in an all-pink lace gown with a flowing cape and matching gloves.

In a video on his Instagram page, Whitemoney revealed that the high cost of attending the AMVCA was a major factor in his absence. He explained that creating an AMVCA-worthy outfit can cost millions of Naira, not even including stylist fees! Feeling the pressure to look his best, and since he doesn’t identify as an actor, Whitemoney opted to skip the event altogether.

On a separate note, Whitemoney also urged his fellow celebrities to pay the designers behind their extravagant AMVCA looks to avoid any awkward situations.

He said,

“I’ve been getting calls about my absence from the AMVCA. How would I go, are you not seeing what these brothers are wearing? Take a look at Neo Akpofure’s dress. Elozonam was dripping in an all-white outfit, like an angel deported from heaven to go create his own heaven on earth. Saga was like all these pink Barbie gentlemen. His dress was awesome.”

“I can’t match their styles. To make an outfit befitting for the AMVCA, you would spend not less than one million naira, and you will still have to pay for a stylist. I’m not an actor, so I’m not even bothered.”

“AMVCA na pressure. Imagine paying over a million naira for a dress you would only wear once. The ladies were just killing it. Next year we move. I can’t relate. But please, make sure you pay your designers in full to avoid them calling you out on social media.”
