Gov Ortom reacts to claim that Benue own militia group

Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has debunked claims that his government runs a militia group.

He spoke on Thursday in Makurdi, when the Benue Youth Prayer Group and National Union of Road Transport Workers, Benue State chapter paid him a condolence visit over recent killings.

The governor described the rumour as a way of diverting attention from the actual problem.

Ortom said, “the rumour is the handiwork of mischief makers who want to divert the attention of people from the killings.”

He insisted that Benue does not need any militia to tackle the incessant attacks on innocent indigenes, “because the Lord God Almighty will help them to defeat their enemies”.

He recalled that if he had wanted to keep a militia group, he would not have disarmed those that were in possession of illegal arms in the first place.

The governor urged his people not to lose faith and hope but hold unto God, adding that they would be victorious at the end.

Leader of the prayer group, Pastor Joshua Ikyernum, said their visit was to identify with the governor over the recent killings of no fewer than 73 persons in the state by some yet to be identified gunmen.

Ikyernum said the group was against the genocide that was presently going on in the state, adding that the perpetrators would surely not go unpunished.

He called on the Federal Government to defend Benue State people and to also arrest those behind the heinous acts.

Secretary-General of NURTW, Comrade Boga Abuul, said the motive of the herdsmen was not free grazing but to take over the entire Benue State valley which they claimed belonged to them.

Abuul said the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore had issued threats and executed their threats without being arrested.

He commended Ortom and the State House of Assembly for the passage and signing of the Anti-Open Grazing Law 2017.

According to him, ranching is the best panacea to the incessant crises between herdsmen and farmers.

Ayo Edebiri, a Nigerian-American actress, recently shared why she left the Pentecostal church she grew up in.

Edebiri, who won awards for her acting, said her beliefs changed a lot after moving to New York. Raised in a strict religious household by Nigerian immigrant parents, she attended a Pentecostal church with her mom.

The church had strict rules about clothing, not allowing jewellery, revealing clothing, or anything form-fitting. She also found the church’s teachings about the second coming of Jesus to be very anxiety-provoking. One of the things that most bothered her was the idea that her friends who were gay or Muslim wouldn’t go to heaven.

Why Fela Kuti Married 27 Women In One Day | Fab.ng

Seun Kuti, the son of the late Afrobeats pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has shared the reasons behind his father’s decision to marry 27 women. These women included his backup singers and dancers, all in one day.

In 1978, Fela Anikulapo Kuti made headlines worldwide by marrying 27 women in a single day. The act was seen as extremely bold and unconventional. This group marriage was not just a spectacle but had deeper motivations behind it.

Seun Kuti explained that Fela’s female dancers and band members were frequently subjected to harsh media scrutiny and were often labelled as prostitutes. This negative portrayal deeply concerned Fela, who has always challenged societal norms and media propaganda. To counter these damaging accusations and preserve the honour and dignity of these women, Fela decided to marry all 27 of them at once.

Seun elaborated that this act was Fela’s way of showing solidarity with his band members and dancers.

It affirmed their importance and value in his life and work. By marrying them, Fela aimed to protect them from societal stigma and ensure they were respected.

In a recent interview on the “Fresh Off The Boat” podcast via Skype, Seun shared these insights. He highlighted his father’s commitment to challenging societal norms and defending the people close to him. This act of marrying 27 women was another example of Fela’s rebellious spirit and desire to stand up against injustice and societal prejudice.

“My father was under immense media propaganda. He was very scrutinised. And most of it were directed to the women that were in his life—his female backup singers, dancers.”

“They all lived together with my dad, but the media started calling them prostitutes. So my dad, in order to preserve their honour and dignity, asked them if they would choose to be his brides, so nobody would call them names anymore, and they all agreed. That was how the marriage happened.”
