AFRIMMA 2017: Nigeria Leads Nominees’ List for Africa Muzik Magazine Awards [Full List of Nominees]

From general award categories such as ‘Crossing Boundaries with Music’, ‘Artiste of the Year’, ‘Best Newcomer’, ‘Best Video Director’ and ‘Song of the Year’, Nigeria could be said to have led the nomination chart in this year’s edition of Dallas-domiciled Africa Muzik Magazine Awards, now called AFRIMMA Awards & Music Festival.

The nominees list released by organisers on Friday reveals the strength of Nigerian artistes such as Wizkid, Flavour, Davido, Tekno, Runtown, Mr Eazi, Timaya, Clarence Peters, Patoronking, Jidenna, Ayo Jay and Maleek Berry on the continent.

This is just as C4 Pedro (Angola),Young Paris  – (Congo), King Kanja – (Kenya), Medikal (Ghana), Diamond Platnumz (Tanzania), Fally Ipupa (Congo), Cassper Nyovest  (South Africa), Eddy Kenzo (Uganda), Buffalo Souljah (Zimbabwe), Justin Campos (South Africa) will be putting up a good fight.

AFRIMMA Founder/CEO Big A Entertainment, Anderson Obiagwu expressed excitement about this year’s award which is in its 4th edition.

According to him, not only will the award show be hosted at a more prestigious venue – House of Blues, Dallas , Texas, United States, two new categories have been added to the 2017 edition –  Best Lusophone and Best Francophone.

Describing the show as the biggest African music awards in the Diaspora, he said this year’s event promises to be the best ever, having also added the Newcomer category with new stars like Dremo, Kadejevera DJ, Hiro, and Mr Leo making the list.

Burna Boy, who achieved international success in 2019, has now made a significant achievement. He recently became the first African artist to sell out the Mercedes Benz Arena in Berlin, Germany, on December 9, 2023, during his I Told Them” world tour.

This marks another historic venue added to the list of venues Burna Boy has sold out, solidifying his status as the first African artist to achieve such milestones.

Earlier this year, Burna Boy made history as the first African to headline a stadium concert in the United Kingdom, selling out the London stadium. He also accomplished the same feat in the United States, selling out the Citi Field stadium in New York.

In 2023, Burna Boy continued to impress his fans and the music audience at large, making history with his 7th album, “I Told Them”, which became his fourth consecutive album to be nominated for the Grammys.

For the 2024 Grammys, Burna Boy earned four nominations, with his hit single “City Boy” nominated for Best African Music Performance, “Alone” nominated for Best Global Music Performance, and his single “Sittin’ On Top Of The World” featuring 21 Savage nominated for Best Melodic Rap Performance.

All these achievements make him the first Nigerian to be nominated as a lead artist outside of the global categories.
