ELOY Awards Announces Mimi Onalaja and Layole Oyatogun As Hosts Of 2016 edition

Mimi Onalaja and Layole Oyatogun are set to host the 2016 edition of the ELOY Awards.
The awards organized by Exquisite Magazine will hold its 8th edition on 27th November 2016 at the Intercontinental Hotel Lagos. Nigerian designers including Wanger Ayu, Tubo, Trish O, Fablane By Derin, Rikaoto by me and more were unveiled alongside Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade and more top celebrities were names released for the 2016 edition’s nominee list.

“The criteria for the ELOY Awards focuses on the character of the individual, her ability and achievements and how her work impacts the Nigerian society, through Direct and Indirect leadership, Service, Commitment, Achievement, Integrity and Character and we look forward to celebrating all nominees and winners and all women” Tewa Onasanya, the editor in chief of Exquisite Magazine shares the criteria for nomination.

About Mimi Onalaja

Omowunmi “Mimi” Onalaja graduated with a Bachelors Degree in International Relations from Covenant University in 2010 and has been on a constant journey to find happiness and fulfillment since then. This resulted in a career switch after a short stint in Human Resource Consulting to TV Presenting and Hosting, which she does presently and loves.

She also has an Acting Diploma from the New York Film Academy with wild dreams and big plans to leave her mark in the Entertainment Industry, from Nigeria to the World. Mimi is currently a member of the Ebonylife TV family, presenting the show “VVIP Events” where she works the red carpet at major fashion, lifestyle and corporate events in Nigeria; co-hosting “Play 2 Win”, a seasonal game show as well as “Destinations Africa”, a travel show with an aim to highlight the glory of the Continent. She also writes a weekly personal fashion and lifestyle column on StyleVitae aptly called “For The Life Of Mimi”. Mimi loves a good laugh and values family, friendship and good ol’ fun! With a recent appreciation for travel, expect her to see as much of the world as she can and document it too!

About Layole Oyatogun

Layole Oyatogun is a Media Personality and Actress. A graduate of Mass Communications from the University of Lagos, she started her career co-presenting an entertainment show called ‘Star Dust’ with her younger sister, Mofe Oyatogun on MITV. She moved on to Silverbird Television where she worked for seven years.

While at Silverbird TV, she conceptualized, presented and produced the Cadbury Breakfast TV show, Page 3, MBGN Diary and numerous documentaries, promos and fillers. As the presenter, producer and scriptwriter of Page 3, a fashion and lifestyle program which has been ranked among the best of its kind, Layole made indelible marks in the industry through her no-holds barred style and feature of celebrities on the show. She also played a key role in the organisation and selection process of Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria pageant.

Layole has featured in the following movies 30 Days by Ego Boyo and Mildred Okwo, Damage, Unconditional by Uche Jombo, Mrs and Mrs Johnson, U- Turn by Grace Oboba, Trapped, The Inn and many more movies. Layole is also a seasoned Red-carpet host, with stints at the red carpet of various Fashion weeks both home and abroad, including; Arise Fashion Week Nigeria, Lagos Fashion and Design Week, Africa Movie Academy Awards AMAA, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Joburg, Pretoria, Malta, and New York. She was the only red carpet host at the inaugural ball of President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice-President Namadi Sambo in Aso-rock. She has also hosted events such as Africa International Fashion Week, Nigeria’s Next Super Model, Denizz Fashion Show, City People Awards for Excellence, Africa Fashion Week Nigeria, Luxury Beauty Brunch, Ethan and Harriet Product Launch Weddings and many more.

Established fashion designer Veekee James recently shared some valuable wisdom with aspiring designers. In an Instagram post uploaded on May 14, 2024, she focused on the importance of brand protection. Veekee James offered key steps that up-and-coming designers can take to safeguard their creations and build a thriving fashion brand.

She wrote,

“I don’t know anything about the issue going around on social media so I can’t really speak on it! Here’s my advise as someone who has been there done that.”

In her advice to aspiring designers, Veekee James emphasised the importance of setting clear boundaries with clients, particularly regarding payment and social media recognition.

She cautioned designers against situations where a client offers social media recognition (tagging the designer on a post) instead of proper payment for their work. This puts the designer in a difficult position, forcing them to choose between financial security and potential brand exposure.

She suggests designers establish clear terms upfront with clients.

“Once anyone comes to you with the ‘Do you want money or tag’ phrase, You better run! I’ve had so many of your faves, both in this country and abroad, use that phrase with me and that was it! Today some of these people will give anything to be in my piece! No cap. It just shows no respect or regard for your brand! Once you allow that, it confirms the fact that your brand has no value whatsoever!” she warned.

In her talk, the designer stressed the importance of clearly communicating a brand’s values to celebrity clientele.

“Be wise! Don’t let money come first before the important things! Sacrifice in business is a must! As long as you have made glaring the values of your brand, be ready to collaborate sometimes only with celebs who respect you as well! Never forget that it’s a win-win for you and the celeb! No one is doing you a favour!”

She stressed the importance of both staying true to your beliefs and not relying solely on celebrity clients for publicity.

“Don’t be desperate to be known through a person! You must know that only God is the LIFTER of Men! He will use only the people He chooses to lift you! Don’t try to do what only God can do for your brand! Don’t expect publicity from every celebrity and make desperate decisions without thinking!” she said.

The celebrity designer added,

“If you want to be a fashion designer, go and research the true meaning of being a designer! So that you don’t end up being a tailor parading him or herself as a designer! If you are a designer, do the work of a designer!”

10th AMVCA: See how celebrities stunned the red carpet | fab.ng

The annual African Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA) unfolded her 10th edition on May 11th, 2024, transforming Lagos’ Eko Hotel and Suites into a dazzling spectacle. Nollywood’s A-listers and Africa’s most celebrated talents in film and television converged for a night of recognition and glamour.

The ceremony, broadcast live on DStv and GOtv, not only celebrated artistic achievements but also served as a platform for showcasing exquisite fashion.

The red carpet buzzed with excitement as celebrities arrived, meticulously embodying the “Wearable Art” theme. From breathtaking gowns that resembled flowing paintings to suits tailored with intricate details, the fashion parade was a visual feast.

Are you aware of the Nigerians who attended the big Met Gala event this year (2024)? The Met Gala is a fancy party once a year where celebrities dress up in amazing costumes. They do it to raise money for a famous art museum in New York City called the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This year, the party had a special theme: “Sleeping Beauties: The Garden of Time.” That theme is based on a story written in 1962 by J.G. Ballard. The story is about how rich and powerful people can’t avoid death, no matter how much money they have or how beautiful they are.
