Nigeria Ranks 3rd In Online Mobile Shopping

Nigerian is ranked third in online mobile shopping worldwide, a report by Paypal has said. PayPal is the most popular way Nigerians pay for cross-border online purchases and 55 percent of Nigerian cross-border shoppers have used the platform for purchases in the past 12 months. According to PayPal, the country’s consumers spent N128.1 billion in 2015 via online shopping, targeting N172 billion by the end of this year.

PayPal’s General Manager Africa and Israel, Efi Dahan, who commented on the shopping trend said: “Nigerians are doing so wherever and whenever they want to, using their mobile devices as an essential shopping tool. “Nigerian online shoppers have realised that the world is their shopping mall when it comes to buying what they need and want. ‘’They are no longer limited to what they can buy domestically, and are confidently scouring the globe for great deals, more choice, high quality and premier brands,” According to the report, Nigeria is home to some of the keenest mobile shoppers on the African continent, and is also the third largest mobile commerce market in terms of incidence of mobile shoppers among the countries that participated in a recent research. With 72 percent of online consumers shopping on a smartphone in Nigeria, the country follows China (86 percent) and India (82 percent) in terms of incidence of shopping via smartphone.

A large majority of consumers pick smartphones to shop online both when shopping cross-border and locally in Nigeria. In terms of the value of this spending, consumers estimate that online mobile shopping accounts for 38 percent of their total online spend, and 36 percent of cross-border purchases. According to the forecasts, this trend is likely to continue.

Netflix has significantly increased its subscription fees for Nigerian users. This marks the second time the popular streaming platform has raised prices in just three months. The substantial hike, impacting all subscription tiers, has drawn criticism from subscribers already burdened by the rising cost of living.

With this latest adjustment, Netflix joins a growing list of companies increasing their prices in Nigeria. This adds to the financial strain on consumers.

“As we continue to add more TV shows and movies and introduce new product features, our plans and prices may change. We also may adjust plans and pricing to respond to local market changes, such as changes to local taxes or inflation,” it said in a statement on its website.

Netflix has recently revised its pricing structure in Nigeria, affecting all four of its subscription plans.

The mobile plan, which allows one user to watch on a mobile device, has seen a significant price increase from ₦1,200 to ₦2,200, representing an 83% rise.

The basic plan’s monthly cost has gone up from ₦2,900 to ₦3,500. For the standard subscription, which offers HD quality viewing on two devices simultaneously, the price has increased from ₦4,000 to ₦5,000 per month.

The premium plan, providing Ultra HD quality on four devices at once and download options for six devices, will now cost ₦7,000 per month.

Netflix has been implementing similar price adjustments in other international markets. United States, the United Kingdom, and France, all inclusive.

This price increase comes at a challenging time for Nigeria. This is because the country is currently dealing with rising inflation and a cost of living crisis.
