My Father Co-wrote Nigeria’s National Anthem But Never Got Credit – Eddy Remedy

Eddy Remedy Says His Father Co-wrote National Anthem | Fab.ng

Eddy Remedy, a musician formerly known as Edward Ashiedu Brown, has sparked discussion by claiming his father deserves recognition for co-writing the Nigerian national anthem.

According to Eddy, his father, Ashiedu Brown, a retired police officer, contributed to the composition while serving in the Nigeria Police Band. Despite this alleged involvement, credit for the anthem’s creation primarily lies with Benedict Elise Odiase, the band’s director.

This lack of recognition, Eddy laments, has deeply upset his father, who has even received no national awards for his supposed contribution. This experience, Eddy claims, led his father to disapprove of his own musical career, fearing Eddy would face similar neglect and a lack of reward from the country.

Eddy’s revelation raises questions about historical attributions and the importance of acknowledging individual contributions, even within collaborative efforts.

He said,

“Now I understand why my dad didn’t want me to do music. Because they did the same thing to him. My dad was among those who wrote the national anthem. But what did he get? Did they give him any recognition? Instead, they gave all the credit to his boss, [Benedict] Odiase, who was the commissioner of Police then.”

Meanwhile, in other news…

A wave of grief swept across Nigeria in August 2023 with the passing of Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of the nation’s beloved flag. The news, shared by his son, Akinkunmi Akinkunmi, on Facebook, painted a portrait of a life well lived and left an indelible mark on the country.

He wrote, “Life is indeed transient, but you lived a life with a remarkable landmark. Rest in peace, father! Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi (O.F.R.): A great man has gone.”

This sombre message resonated deeply with Nigerians, as Akinkunmi’s contribution transcended individual achievement. His story began in 1958 while he was studying abroad. As Nigeria neared independence from British rule, a national call for flag designs arose. Akinkunmi, inspired by this momentous occasion, submitted his entry amidst over 2,000 hopeful participants.

Standing out amongst the throng, his design resonated with the selection committee. On October 1st, 1960, Independence Day, the vibrant green and white stripes, now imbued with national significance, replaced the British Union Jack. For his design, Akinkunmi received a £100 award, but his true reward undoubtedly lay in the lasting legacy of his creation.

Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi’s passing was not just the loss of an individual, but a poignant reminder of the power of symbolism and the enduring impact of creative contributions to national identity. His legacy lives on in every flutter of the Nigerian flag, a testament to his artistic vision and the spirit of the nation.
