South African superstar Tyla has achieved another remarkable milestone by securing three nominations in the Top Afrobeats Song category for the 2024 Billboard Music Awards.
The recently released nominee list has unveiled several unexpected recognitions, with Tyla emerging as a standout performer.
Notably, Tyla has garnered nominations across multiple prestigious categories, including Top R&B Artist, Top R&B Female Artist, and Top Afrobeats Artist.
Impressively, she has also secured the highest number of entries in the Top Afrobeats Song category, featuring critically acclaimed singles from her eponymous debut studio album, released on March 22, 2024.
The nominated tracks include her breakthrough hit “Water”, along with “Truth or Dare”, “Jump.”
Competing alongside Tyla in this competitive category is Tems with her single “Me & U”, as well as Adam Port & Stryv featuring Malachiii with their track “Move”.
This recent recognition follows her triumphant win in the Best Afrobeats category at the 2024 VMAs, which took place on September 11, 2024, at The USB Arena in New York.
During the ceremony, she celebrated her smash hit single “Water” by accepting the Moonperson award and acknowledging the song’s global impact.
The Top Afrobeats Song category also features other notable nominations, including Ayra Starr’s “Last Heartbreak Song”, Chris Brown’s “Sensational” featuring Lojay and Davido, Usher’s “Ruin” featuring Pheelz, and Tems’ “Love Me Heje”.
While on stage holding the Moonperson, the South African star acknowledged the impact of the global hit song. “The global impact that ‘Water’ has had on the world just proves that African music can be pop music too,” she began.
“This is just so special, but also bittersweet because I know there’s a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats,” Tyla continued.”It’s a thing, and even though Afrobeats has run things and has opened so many doors for us, African music is so diverse. It’s more than just Afrobeats.”
