Big Brother Naija star Whitemoney, whose real name is Hazel Oyeze Onou, has had a change of heart about winning the Grammys. Previously, Whitemoney was quite vocal about his aspirations to one day take home a Grammy. However, his recent comments suggest a shift in his perspective on the prestigious American award.
Whitemoney now believes that the Grammys have lost their lustre and impartiality. He feels the award ceremony is no longer a true reflection of musical merit.
This change of opinion seems to be fueled by the fact that heavyweight Nigerian musicians like Davido and Burna Boy were noticeably absent from the Grammy nominations last year. This leads Whitemoney to suspect that the Grammys might be using popular Nigerian artists to generate publicity without giving them the recognition they deserve.
In light of this, Whitemoney has decided to focus his energy on awards that he feels better represent success in the African music scene. He has set his sights on awards shows like the Headies, a prominent Nigerian award ceremony that celebrates achievements in Nigerian music.
By prioritising awards that acknowledge and celebrate Afrobeats and other African music genres, Whitemoney feels he can stay relevant within the industry he cares most about.
