My First Project Under Sony Music Felt Like A Failure – Davido

Davido Talks About His Early Days With Sony Music | Fab.ng

Afrobeat music is taking the world by storm, and one of its leading stars is Grammy-nominated Nigerian artist Davido. In a recent interview on “The Bride” alongside celebrities like footballer Aurelian Thouameni, Davido opened up about the struggles he faced early on in his career with Sony Music.

Davido signed with Sony Music in 2016, right after selling out a massive stadium in Mali. However, he revealed that he still had to prove himself to people at the label who weren’t familiar with his achievements back home in Nigeria.

Davido talked about the transition from being a massive star in Africa to having to rebuild his recognition as an up-and-coming artist in the US market. He said,

“When we come to sign record deals overseas, they don’t know we are superstars back home. When I signed my first deal, I just did a 60,000-capacity stadium in Mali. So when you signed a new deal, they’re asking you ‘What’s your name? What type of music do you make?”

Davido went on to say that Sony Music paired him with well-respected producers to work on a new project. This resulted in his 2016 EP “Son of Mercy,” but by his admission, it fell short of his expectations.

“When I first came they put me with some producers but it didn’t work out. We dropped an EP under Sony which was my first project but it felt like a failure to me. Some people might see it as success but that wasn’t it for me.”

In the interview, Davido reflected on his early days with Sony Music. Despite signing with them after a massive concert sell-out in Mali, he still felt pressure to prove himself as an artist unfamiliar with the label. He collaborated with top producers on a project—the 2016 EP “Son of Mercy.” It included popular tracks like “Skelewu,” “How Long” featuring Tinashe, and “Coolest Kid in Africa” featuring Nasty C.

However, by Davido’s standards, the EP didn’t quite meet his expectations as a hitmaker. Among the songs, only the Afrobeats-inspired “Skelewu” truly resonated with local audiences, suggesting the EP, intended to launch him in the US market, missed the mark.

Following this, Davido returned to Lagos and created new music with his usual producers. This resulted in the song “IF,” produced and co-written by Tekno. “IF” achieved the international success that Sony Music had originally hoped for with “Son of Mercy.”

The interview stretched beyond Davido’s personal experiences. He also discussed the global rise of Nigerian music, acknowledging the sacrifices made by the first generation of stars who paved the way, and the ongoing efforts by himself and other current stars to ensure success for future generations.

Olamide & Asake Officially Part Ways; Alleged Details Of Contract Termination Emerge

Olamide, Asake officially part ways | fab.ng

YBNL Music founder Olamide has approved the early contract termination of artist Asake, videowheelztv reports.

The contract dissolution grants Asake ownership of his master recordings from his tenure with the label. Both parties have established a 10-year royalty-sharing arrangement to continue the financial terms of their original agreement.

The separation took place in recent months, following Asake’s release of his album “Lungu Boy.”

Speaking on the separation, Olamide reportedly said:

I didn’t create YBNL because I wanted to make money. I created it because I wanted to see other young people grow, so if any artist under me wants to leave, they are free.

He added more specifically that,

Asake has done his part, and I’m proud of him.

Reports earlier this week revealed that Asake removed all YBNL-related content from his social media profiles and unfollowed his connections, including Olamide.

Sources indicate that Olamide extended a new contract offer to Asake following the expiration of his initial YBNL agreement.

Despite Olamide’s attempts to secure Asake’s continued partnership, the artist declined the offer, choosing to separate from the mentor who significantly contributed to his international success.

An insider disclosed that the situation reached its conclusion two weeks ago when Asake definitively ended negotiations, expressing his intention to operate independently.

The development marks a significant shift in their professional relationship, which began in 2022 when Asake first signed with YBNL.

During his tenure with the label, Asake achieved remarkable success, releasing multiple hit singles and notably selling out London’s O2 Arena on two occasions.

OdumoduBlvck on how Don Jazzy gifted him $10,000 | fab.ng

OdumoduBlvck recently praised Mavin Records founder Don Jazzy in an interview with Beats FM.

The rapper discussed his latest project, “Nothing Changed,” a collaborative effort with the Anti-World Gangsters crew. The album features Don Jazzy on the track “Asampete.”

OdumoduBlvck revealed that after recording “Asampete,” he felt the song would benefit from Don Jazzy’s contribution. When approached, Don Jazzy readily agreed to the request.

During their meeting, Don Jazzy not only added his vocals to the song but also surprised OdumoduBlvck with a generous gift of $10,000.

Impressively, Don Jazzy declined any royalties for his contribution to the track.

“When I went to his house to get his vocals, he gave me $10,000 and even my friend was asking me why he gave me such a huge amount of money,” he narrated in the interview.

OdumoduBlvck further praised Don Jazzy, describing him as the most original personality in the Nigerian music industry and a true icon.

“There’s nobody more original than Don Jazzy…The way the younger artists look up to Burna Boy, Davido, Wizkid, and Olamide today is how they used to look up to Don Jazzy”.

OdumoduBlvck’s praise for Don Jazzy’s generosity and influence on the Nigerian music industry echoes sentiments expressed by numerous artists whose careers have been shaped by the Mavin Records boss.

Four-time Grammy nominee Davido has credited Don Jazzy and D’banj’s flamboyant lifestyle for inspiring him to relocate to Nigeria and pursue his musical aspirations.

Don Jazzy’s philanthropic endeavours also continue to make headlines. Recently, he donated a substantial sum of 100 million naira to Very Dark Man’s charity.
