It was all smiles, warm hugs and lots of love on the 26th and 27th of October, as the Queen’s College Old Girls Class of 1998 celebrated 20 years since their graduation from the renowned all-girls secondary school.
The two-day event started off with a mentoring day, themed ‘Shaping The Future’, where the Old Girls spent the day with the SS2 students of their Alma Mater. Drawing from their experiences and successes since leaving the four walls of Queen’s College, the mentoring event was an opportunity to create a bond with the younger generation and to equip them with skills that would help them to be confident and capable contributors to the society.
Adesuwa Onyenokwe, publisher of Today’s Woman, delivered an inspiring keynote address to start the day, which she concluded by enjoining the girls to sing the song, ‘This Is Me’ from the movie, The Greatest Showman.
A panel discussion followed immediately after, and featured Adaora Mbelu-Dania, Director of The Trellis Group and QCOG ‘03; Foluso Gbadamosi, Director, Business Process & Technology, Prime Atlantic Group, QCOG ‘98; Mojolaoluwa Aderemi-Makinde, Business Leader, Google; Koko Ekeng, Life Coach, Goal Setting PRO and QCOG ‘98; and Omolola Ani, Drilling Manager, Mobil Producing Nigeria. The discussion revolved around self development, excelling in life, and the challenges they encountered and overcame growing up and in their career journeys.
The breakout sessions saw the students divided into groups of 10 and assigned to one mentor. Mentors had their individual topics, which were placed under seven categories of Entrepreneurship, Creating Your Future, STEM – Science & Engineering, Women in Media, Agriculture, Finance and Safety. The mentors comprised Old Girls from the class of ‘98 and other years, as well as business owners and staff from companies like English Manner Nigeria, Hermosa Boda, Mobil Producing Nigeria, KLSNaturals, Andersen Tax, and Bridget Elesin.
Wellness coach and weight loss expert, Damola Ladejobi, popularly known as Coach Damz also gave the girls a talk on living healthy and personal hygiene, which ended with the students taking a pledge to take good care of their wellbeing.
After all the hard talk, the Old Girls showed that they could play hard, as they engaged the students in a Shaku Shaku dance-off, which ended with everyone feeling like a winner. The Old Girls also appreciated seven academic and two non-academic long-serving staff of Queen’s College, with gifts of cash and kind.
The day rounded up with the students super excited and inspired and the old girls feeling fulfilled, with hopes to continue regular mentoring sessions in the near future.
The second day had the Old Girls treat themselves to a dinner at the Pearl Garden Chinese Restaurant. It was a night of fun and laughter as the ladies relived memories from their school days and played catch up, whilst dancing to songs from the 90s.
The FAB Group, Life Saver Water, BopsXpress, Scentify, Italian Hair, Bigid, Merchant Plus and Abela, as well as some anonymous donors were sponsors of the QCOG ‘98 20th anniversary.
