Shawn Mendes wins Best Artist at MTV Europe Music Awards

Canadian teen singer Shawn Mendes on Sunday won best artist and best song at the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) in London, pipping heavyweight competitors such as Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and Ed Sheeran.

The awards ceremony at Wembley Arena, the first to be staged in the British capital in 20 years, were hosted by Rita Ora and featured performances by U2 and David Guetta.

In a first for the EMAs, which were created in 1994, MTV announced categories stripped of gender in a bid to “break barriers”.
Mendes, 19, who launched his career by posting song covers to the internet before getting signed to a record label, also scooped the “biggest fans” award.

He performed the track that won him best song — There’s Nothing Holding Me Back — in front of an electrified crowd in London.

Eminem, who opened the show by unveiling his new single Walk on Water — ahead of the release on Friday of his latest album Revival — won for best hip-hop artist.

Cuban-American singer Camila Cabello was honoured with the best pop prize, while Coldplay snatched the best rock award.

French DJ David Guetta, who performed in front of the youthful crowd, won for best electronic act.

Taylor Swift, who was expected to be one of the big winners of the night with six nominations, failed to win any awards.

The majority of the winners were picked by music fans in an online vote, from 12 categories listed and a further 32 separate prizes for different countries and regions.

Louis Tomlinson, from the boy band One Direction, landed the best UK and Ireland act.

The best video, claimed by US rapper Kendrick Lamar, was one of the few awards to be chosen by the MTV team.

Other big-name winners included Ed Sheeran, for best live act, and Dua Lipa, for best new performer.

Thirty Seconds to Mars were named best alternative.

Irish band U2 collected MTV’s “Global Icon” gong, previously awarded to Queen, Whitney Houston and Eminem.

“U2’s impact on music, pop culture and social issues around the world has been tremendous,” said Bruce Gillmer, producer of the awards ceremony.

“For over four decades and counting, they’ve entertained, influenced, and inspired fans around the globe,” he added.

U2 performed in London’s Trafalgar Square the night before the MTV awards, along with DJ Guetta, to a crowd of 7,000 who won free tickets in a ballot.

This year saw the MTV Europe Music Awards return to London for the first time since 1996.

British singer and actress Rita Ora took charge of the ceremony and also turned in a popular stage performance.

The cable channel also runs the Video Music Awards which are renowned for top performances and the occasional controversy, including pop diva Lady Gaga wearing a dress made of meat to the ceremony in 2010.

The previous Video Music Awards saw hip-hop artist Kanye West leap on stage to interrupt an acceptance speech by Swift and argue that Beyonce was better.

In a recent interview, Nigerian actress Yvonne Jegede talked about her past marriage. She said she wished she had considered financial security more before getting married.

Jegede was married to actor Olakunle Fawole, but their marriage ended. In the interview, she said things changed after they got married. Her husband started finding fault with how she talked to him. He also made a big deal about their age difference, even though it wasn’t a problem before.

She said,

“He is eight years older than me. But the moment we got married, if I tell am say, ‘You dey crase,’ he would say I’m disrespecting him. I would then be like, ‘It’s the same me, same thing I’ve been saying for over 10 years.'”

Jegede went on to explain that financial issues played a significant role in her decision to end the marriage. She felt she was carrying more of the financial burden than her husband.

“Let me just state the fact, I was bringing more of the money. Now I’m taking care of my son like nobody exists around me and it’s not easy, it’s not funny. I should have gone for money instead of love. Let me be very honest…”

Jegede’s comments about her marriage sparked discussions online, particularly about finances in marriage. Many social media users expressed their opinions. One person on Instagram even posted a message hoping for partners who take financial responsibility in relationships.

“As a guy, nor let money finish for your hand sha😢😢. Try ur best🙏,” said another user.

Another Instagram user said, “Anything a woman does for a man is never forgotten, but she might not always recall the times when the man supported her. Some women have selective memories, and it’s like they have two sides to them.”

Stephanie Coker opens up on her battle with PCOS | Fab.ng

Stephanie Coker-Aderinokun, a media personality and actress, bravely discussed her challenges with PCOS and IVF in a recent interview with Chude Jideonwo. She revealed the emotional turmoil she faced after her second IVF attempt failed, confessing that she nearly resorted to taking her own life.

Stephanie disclosed that she invested a significant amount of money, over $40,000. She went as far as travelling to Los Angeles for an IVF procedure, only to have it end unsuccessfully last year.

After an unsuccessful round of IVF, she felt deeply discouraged and confided in a friend. She expressed a strange sense of rejection, feeling like even the baby didn’t want her. This was especially difficult because IVF was her only chance at having a child due to her PCOS.

The PCOS caused such severe bleeding that she was hospitalised, and at her worst point, she was confined to a wheelchair and even had to sleep outside in the garden to cope with the overwhelming internal heat. It had been a very physically and emotionally challenging time.

Furthermore, Stephanie Coker shared how the challenges escalated when her husband faced public scrutiny and lost his election. This intensified the backlash against them, adding another layer of difficulty to their already challenging situation.

President Tinubu Is Officially My GOAT—Brymo | Fab.ng

After the change in the national anthem, singer Brymo declared President Tinubu the Greatest of All Time (G.O.A.T.) among all previous presidents.

The controversial singer declared this in an Instagram Story post on May 30, 2024.

He posted the lyrics of the old national anthem, emphasising the first stanza and comparing Africa and Nigeria to “polygamy” and a “family unit.”

He said,

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is officially my G.O.A.T of all the Nigerian presidents! Read the lyrics of the new national anthem. The first stanza is all you need; it asserts Nigeria for the motherland and now Africa can be the fatherland and be a symbol of polygamy and we can all focus on one family unit. My favourite part is ‘In brotherhood, we stand.’ We are all now members of the greatest cult on earth. Nigeria is now the only brotherhood that every boy and ambitious girl must belong to in this country. I am very happy.”

The Senate and the House of Representatives recently approved legislation to change the national anthem from “Arise, O Compatriots” to “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.” Shortly after, on May 29, 2024, President Tinubu signed the bill into law, officially changing the national anthem.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced this on Wednesday, May 29, during a joint session of the National Assembly. This also marked the 25th anniversary of Nigeria’s 4th Republic.

The change led to a range of reactions from Nigerians on social media, including confusion, anger, frustration, and, for some, like Brymo, happiness. Nigerian celebrities also expressed their feelings about the swift reversion to the previous national anthem.

Lillian Jean Williams wrote, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.” She is a British expatriate who lived in Nigeria during its independence era, while Frances Berda composed the music. Pa Benedict Odiase wrote “Arise, O Compatriots,” and it was adopted in 1978.
