Tuface Idibia’s Protest: Court Fixes Oct 11 To Hear Suit

A Federal High Court, Lagos has fixed Oct. 11 to hear a suit by a Lagos-based lawyer, Chief Malcolm Omirhobo, seeking the enforcement of the fundamental rights of citizens to peaceful assembly, liberty and association.

Omirhobo had in a class action, sued for himself and on behalf of millions of Nigerians, over an alleged disruption of a Feb. 6 planned mass protest by popular Nigerian musician, Innocent Idibia a. k. a. 2face.

Joined as respondents in the fundamental rights suit are: the Inspector General of Police, the Attorney-General of the Federation. the Commissioner of Police Lagos State and the Attorney-General of Lagos State.

In the suit numbered FHC/CS/ 842/17, the lawyer is seeking among other reliefs, a declaration that by the combined effects of Sections 39 to 41 of the constitution, it is the duty of the Police to provide security for intending protesters.

He avers that a failure of the police to provide the requisite security measures in favour of the planned protest which had been slated for Feb. 6, constitutes a breach of citizens’ fundamental right to peaceful assembly.

At the resumed hearing of the case, Omirhobo announced appearance for the applicant, while there was no legal representation for the respondents.

He informed the court that he had yet to serve processes on some of the respondents in Abuja, and urged the court for time to do the needful.

Consequently, Justice Chuka Obiozor ordered that all processes be regularized. He adjourned the suit until Oct. 11, for hearing.

Omirhobo is seeking a declaration that the coercion and intimidation of 2face, by threatening to arrest him, if he dared to lead the planned protest, amounts to a breach of his right to freedom of association, expression and movement.

He also seeks a declaration that the intimidation of 2face by the police, leading to a cancellation of the planned protest, which was meant to march against the rising wave of hunger and recession in the country, constituted a breach of citizens’ right to freedom of expression.

The applicant is therefore, seeking an order of perpetual injunction, restraining the respondents from further preventing the applicant or other aggrieved citizens of Nigeria, from organizing or convening peaceful assemblies, meetings or rallies.

He is also seeking an order of perpetual injunction restraining the respondents from further issuing threat statements to members of the public, and other interest groups from exercising their fundamental rights.

The applicant also calls for a public apology from the respondents to the generality of Nigerians, for frustrating a planned peaceful protest. Obiozor will hear the case on Oct. 11.

Nigerian rapper Falz has clarified that he was not pressured to study law due to his father’s success in the field.

Falz revealed in an interview with Chude Jideonwo on the “With Chude” podcast that his father, Femi Falana SAN, helped and fought for people who inspired him. This experience motivated him to pursue a legal career, contrary to popular belief.

He said,

“I won’t say it was pressure but when I was super young, it was like, ‘These people have to be something’ because I was already getting that reaction everywhere I went. And if I ever mentioned my name, people would be like, ‘Which Falana? Is it Femi Falana? Oh wow.'”

“Everyone sort of had a story about how my dad came to their aid at some point in time and how he fought for them and was there for them. At that time it was me taking everything in, like, ‘this is something’. So at that point in time, I wasn’t pressured; I aspired to emulate what he was doing,” he added.

This recognition made a deep impact on him, and he decided on his own to study law. Although he pursued a legal education, he practiced law only for a short period.

His decision to enter the field came from personal motivation. Despite his brief time practicing, the experience left its mark. Indeed, it shaped his perspective and contributing to his overall journey.

“I did practice law for a short period of time. Very short, almost two years. I worked at the Ministry of Justice during my youth service, which was like 2012 or so, then in 2013 I was at my father’s firm and 2014 was when things started to pick up for me so I started going out of practice,” he added in between laughter.

Bobrisky Breaks Silence on Falz Defamation Claims | fab.ng

Following a 24-hour ultimatum to retract defamatory statements made against Nigerian singer Falz and his father in a viral voice note, crossdresser Bobrisky has issued a statement.

In an Instagram post on October 16, 2023, Bobrisky denied making any defamatory remarks about Falz or his father. He emphasized that he is awaiting an official response from his legal counsel before providing further details on the matter.

This statement comes in response to the serious allegations made against Bobrisky, which have sparked widespread public attention and concern.

He wrote,

“TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: In reply to the two letters in circulation from the Law Firm of the Falanas. I like to state for the records and pending the official reply from my counsel, state for the avoidance of doubt that I, Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, aka Bobrisky, did not publish any defamatory statement or statements concerning the learnt SAN and his Son Falz.”

Bobrisky demands accountability from the publisher of defamatory statements against Falz and his father.

“It is in the public domain pursuant to my solicitor’s letter dated the 27th day of September 2024 that I have denied any knowledge of what VDM published. I stand by my express denial and put the matter to strict proof and advise that whoever has been defamed should hold the publisher of the defamatory content and my fundamental rights to privacy of my communications should be respected and protected.”

In another story post, Bobrisky emphasized that the responsibility lay with Verydarkman, not him.

“I OKUNEYE idris aka BOBRISKY didn’t give Falz or his dad any money for pardon. As a matter of fact no penny was given to them. Have said dis before and i will say it again. The person that published an Audio online should take fully responsible for what he posted in public. My lawyer will respond to any further information d public want to about dis ongoing issue trending on social media,” he wrote.

The controversy erupted when media personality Verydarkman released an alleged voice note from Bobrisky that quickly spread across the internet.

In this explosive recording, Bobrisky openly admitted that he had evaded prison time despite receiving a sentence for money laundering. Furthermore, the crossdresser boldly claimed that he had paid both Falz and his father to secure a pardon.

Subsequently, after the damaging voice note became public, Falz and his father’s law chambers took immediate action by issuing a stern 24-hour ultimatum to Verydarkman, demanding that he retract his statement.

However, Verydarkman remained defiant and refused to comply with their demands. As a result of his non-compliance, the legal battle intensified, leading to the court’s decisive action.

Finally, the court ruled against Verydarkman. They imposed a substantial fine of ₦500 million. Additionally, they ordered him to remove all defamatory posts related to the matter.

“They say I like to dress like a rapper because I love urban fashion. I love wearing T-shirts, jeans, and sneakers to look comfortable. You will find me in a suit when it’s time to collect money. Sometimes, I also wear Agbada,” Davido shared.
