NBA Roundup: Giannis Triple-Double Leads Milwaukee Bucks To Win Over Toronto Raptors

NBA roundup: Giannis triple-double leads Milwaukee Bucks | fab.ng

Giannis Antetokounmpo (30) recorded his fourth triple-double of the season, contributing 11 points, 12 rebounds, and a season-high 13 assists.

Meanwhile, Damian Lillard (34) scored 25 points, leading the Milwaukee Bucks to a decisive 128-104 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Monday night.

Antetokounmpo’s exceptional passing, including 10 assists in the first half alone, ignited the Bucks’ offence and propelled them to victory, snapping a two-game losing streak.

The Bucks had recently faced a challenging period, losing four of their last five games, all against teams with losing records.

However, they convincingly overcame the struggling 8-28 Raptors, despite the absence of Khris Middleton due to an ankle injury.

Bucks coach Doc Rivers praised Antetokounmpo’s playmaking abilities, stating, “Giannis’ passing set the whole tone for our team.”

“When your best player does that, it becomes contagious and the ball just moved,” Rivers said.

The only downside for the Bucks was a cut Antetokounmpo suffered on his right little finger when he hit the rim on a block attempt late in the first half.

Rivers said it required stitches to stop the bleeding, but Antetokounmpo wanted to stay in a game in which he and Lillard were both able to rest the entire fourth quarter anyway.

Zach LaVine led the Chicago Bulls to a thrilling 114-110 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Chicago, scoring 35 points while also contributing 10 rebounds and eight assists.

The Bulls staged a remarkable comeback, overcoming a 19-point deficit in the third quarter.

Coby White played a crucial role in the victory, scoring 23 points. He drove for a go-ahead layup and followed it up with a powerful dunk, giving the Bulls a 113-110 lead with 15.9 seconds remaining. LaVine then sealed the win with a free throw.

The Bulls successfully countered another impressive performance from San Antonio’s star rookie, Victor Wembanyama. He recorded 23 points, 14 rebounds, four assists, and an astonishing eight blocked shots.

In Detroit, Cade Cunningham orchestrated a remarkable comeback for the Pistons.

They scored 32 points and dished out nine assists as they overcame an early 22-point deficit to defeat the Portland Trail Blazers 118-115.

Tim Hardaway Jr. ignited the Pistons’ fourth-quarter surge, scoring 11 of his 26 points during the final period. He drained back-to-back three-pointers, giving the Pistons a 109-106 lead with less than three minutes remaining.

The Trail Blazers mounted a late challenge, twice narrowing the deficit to just one point. Anfernee Simons’ three-pointer with 12 seconds left brought the score to 117-115.

However, Malik Beasley sealed the Pistons’ fourth consecutive win by making one of two free throws and securing a crucial steal.

The Phoenix Suns snapped a four-game losing streak with a 109-99 victory over the short-handed Philadelphia 76ers in Philadelphia.

Coach Mike Budenholzer’s decision to shake up the starting lineup by moving Bradley Beal to the bench proved successful. Beal ignited the Suns’ offence, scoring 25 points, with 20 of those coming in the second half.

The Suns trailed by as many as 12 points in the first quarter and entered halftime with a four-point deficit. However, their bench outscored the 76ers’ reserves by a significant margin, 54-7.

Tyrese Maxey led the 76ers with 31 points and 10 assists. And Kelly Oubre Jr. contributed 26 points and 11 rebounds. The 76ers were without Joel Embiid and Kyle Lowry due to injuries.

In New York, the injury-ravaged Orlando Magic upset the struggling Knicks 103-94.

Cole Anthony led the Magic with 24 points, while Wendell Carter Jr. provided a significant spark off the bench, scoring 19 points. The Magic remain without their top four scorers: Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Jalen Suggs, and Moritz Wagner.

Jalen Brunson and Mikal Bridges each scored 24 points for the Knicks. The Knicks suffered their third consecutive loss after a nine-game winning streak.

In Memphis, Jaren Jackson Jr. dominated. He scored 35 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Grizzlies to a 119-104 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

The Mavericks, missing key players Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, dropped their fifth straight game.

The Minnesota Timberwolves snapped their three-game losing streak with a thrilling 108-106 comeback victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. Anthony Edwards fuelled the comeback, scoring 37 points for the Timberwolves.

Taiwo Awoniyi’s Goal Lifts Nottingham Forest Past Wolves | fab.ng

Taiwo Awoniyi made a triumphant return to Premier League action. He scored in stoppage time to help Nottingham Forest crush Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 on Monday evening.

The Super Eagles striker completed his dramatic comeback from injury, finding the net for the first time in the 2024/25 season, precisely 324 days after a devastating setback had forced him to watch from the sidelines.

Forest manager Steve Cooper introduced Awoniyi in the 88th minute, and the Nigerian international seized his opportunity with both hands.

Morgan Gibbs-White orchestrated the decisive moment, threading a precise pass through Wolves’ defensive line.

Awoniyi, demonstrating his predatory instincts, latched onto the ball and dispatched it into the net with clinical precision, sending the City Ground into rapturous celebration.

The emotional weight of the moment overwhelmed Taiwo Awoniyi as he sank to his knees after scoring.

He reached for his shin pads, which carried a deeply personal message – the Bible verse James 1:17.

The passage reads, “Every good and perfect gift is from above,” and pressed them against his face in a poignant display of gratitude and relief.

This victory carried significant implications for Nottingham Forest’s remarkable 2024/25 campaign. The team has now strung together an impressive sequence of six consecutive Premier League victories.

This cemented their position in third place on the table. Forest’s 40-point tally matches Arsenal’s in second position. Meanwhile, Liverpool maintains a six-point advantage at the summit with a game still in hand.

Awoniyi’s goal served as the perfect exclamation point on Forest’s commanding performance, underlining their transformation into genuine title contenders.

The striker’s emotional celebration resonated throughout the stadium. Furthermore, it marks not just a personal milestone in his recovery journey but also symbolises Forest’s remarkable ascent into English football’s top flight.

Don’t miss the inspiring photos of his celebration! Watch the goal video below.

Emerse Fae Insists Simon Adingra Must “Work Hard” To Emulate Drogba In Premier League

Simon Adingra Must "Work Hard" To Emulate Drogba... | fab.ng

Emerse Fae, the 40-year-old coach of Cote d’Ivoire, has provided a roadmap for Simon Adingra to fulfil his extraordinary potential and achieve Premier League stardom, mirroring the success of Didier Drogba.

Simon Adingra, the 22-year-old winger, signed a four-year contract with Brighton & Hove Albion on June 24, 2022, after a successful stint with Nordsjaelland in Denmark.

Immediately following his signing, Brighton loaned him to Union Saint-Gilloise for the 2022-23 season, where he gained valuable experience.

This season, Adingra has featured in 14 Premier League matches for Brighton, making five starts. He has contributed two goals to the team, with his most recent strike coming in the 2-2 draw against Aston Villa on December 30th.

Notably, he also played a significant role in Brighton’s hard-fought draw against Arsenal on Saturday.

While Fae, the reigning African Coach of the Year, acknowledges the excitement surrounding Adingra, he cautions against constant comparisons to the legendary Chelsea striker, Didier Drogba.

Instead, Fae emphasises the specific steps Simon Adingra must take to emulate Drogba’s success in the English Premier League.

“I don’t like to compare players. Drogba is Drogba and Adingra is Adingra. They are not the same kind of player and he’s different from Drogba,” Fae said.

“He’s a young player with a lot of talent. I just hope he continues to work hard because, at his age, consistent effort is crucial for improving day by day and year after year.

“At the moment, he is not a regular starter at Brighton, so he must work hard to earn that position and continue his efforts, particularly as he still has limited international caps.

“He’s a young international player, so he needs to stay focused and keep working hard to improve, aiming to build a career similar to Drogba’s.”

Didier Drogba achieved remarkable success with Chelsea during his illustrious eight-year tenure at Stamford Bridge. The tenure included a brief return in the 2014-15 season.

He led the team to three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, and the pinnacle of club football – the UEFA Champions League.

Drogba’s impact extended beyond trophies. He set numerous scoring records for Chelsea. This includes the most goals by a non-English player with an impressive tally of 164.

He also excelled in the Champions League. Scoring 36 goals, he also demonstrated a knack for decisive moments, netting nine goals in cup finals.

His brilliance was further recognized with two Premier League Golden Boot awards, earned in the 2006-07 and 2009-10 seasons.

Fae also strongly emphasizes the critical importance of Adingra’s continued involvement with the Ivorian national team.

The coach explained: “It’s a pleasure for me to have him in my team because he brings a lot of positive qualities. I hope he continues to work hard to reach the top.

“He will be in great form for the upcoming (international) matches. Being nominated for the African Player of the Year at such a young age is a significant achievement too.”

Adingra made his debut for the Ivory Coast national team, known as the Elephants, in 2023. He quickly rose to prominence on the international stage. He played a crucial role in their triumphant 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, hosted on home soil.

Adingra contributed significantly to the team’s success. He scored against Mali in the quarter-finals and provided two crucial assists in the final against Nigeria.

His outstanding performances earned him the prestigious award for the tournament’s Best Young Player.

Fae expresses his gratitude for the unwavering support he has received from Cote d’Ivoire’s football legends. Particularly from Didier Drogba, he has received support since he was appointed the head coach of the Ivorian national team.

The former Nantes midfielder added, “He’s a person who, just by being here, boosts the players’ confidence. He’s here for the players.

“He makes an effort to communicate with the players and does his best to inspire strength in the team to keep moving forward.”

The reigning African champions now set their sights on qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This follows their absence from the previous two editions of the tournament.

The coach has unequivocally stated that failing to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup would be completely unacceptable.

“It would be hard to accept the Ivory Coast not making it to the World Cup. This challenge is very important to me and has been on my mind since our last game against Chad in the AFCON qualifiers,” Fae said.

“We’re going to give it our all. We’re going to work extremely hard to be prepared for the match.

“Our goal is to win our next two games against Burundi and Gambia, maintain the top spot in the group, and increase our chances of qualifying for the World Cup.”

Double Olympic Champion Beatrice Chebet Caps Stellar 2024 With Women’s 5km World Record

Beatrice Chebet caps stellar 2024 with 5km world record | fab.ng

Beatrice Chebet, the 24-year-old Kenyan runner, shattered the women’s 5 km world record at Tuesday’s Barcelona’s Cursa dels Nassos road race.

She blazed through the course in 13 minutes and 54 seconds, becoming the first woman in history to break the 14-minute barrier in this event.

Chebet’s remarkable performance demolished her own previous world record, which she had established exactly one year earlier on the same Barcelona course, by an impressive 19 seconds.

Running alone at the front of the pack, she maintained a blistering pace throughout the race. As she crossed the finish line, Chebet celebrated her historic achievement with her friends and supporters who waited to embrace her.

This world record adds to Chebet’s extraordinary list of accomplishments, reportedly including victories in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters at the Paris Games.

“I’m super happy as everything went according to plan,” Chebet said in remarks provided by World Athletics. “I felt capable of running under 14 and I managed to do so. Two races in Barcelona and two world records, can I ask for more?”

Beatrice Chebet dominated the track throughout the year with remarkable performances. She etched her name in history by breaking the 10,000-meter world record at Eugene in May.

Later, she powered her way to victory in the 5,000-meter Diamond League final in September, claiming her second title in this prestigious series.

Looking ahead to her future goals, Chebet has set her sights on the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.

She aims to compete in both the 5,000 and 10,000-meter events, building on her previous World Championship medals – a silver from 2022 and a bronze from 2023 in the 5,000 meters.
