The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) released a report on Friday, August 9, 2024. This report detailed the highest-grossing films at the box office for the week of August 2 to August 8. “The Betrayed,” a Nigerian film directed by Zulomoke Oyibo, performed well in its first week of release.
“The Betrayed” earned ₦14.7 million. This makes it the second-highest-grossing film overall and the top-grossing Nollywood film for the week.
The movie tells the story of a young woman on a psychological journey. She is controlled by a mysterious figure who believes her husband stole money from a crime group. It features a strong cast including Uche Montana, Gabriel Afolayan, Adunni Ade, Ibrahim Suleiman, Jemima Osunde, Vine Olugu, and Stephanie Zibili.
Hollywood film “Deadpool and Wolverine” claimed the top spot for the week. It stars Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds. The movie grossed an impressive ₦127 million in the past week. With this, it brought its total earnings to ₦354.5 million over two weeks of release.
In third place was “What About Us,” which Pastor Emmanuel Iren directed. This film earned ₦9.9 million for the week, with a total gross of ₦87.5 million since its release on July 12.
An American animated comedy, “Despicable Me 4” occupied the fourth position. It earned ₦9.3 million for the week, bringing its total earnings to ₦74 million since its June 28 release.
“Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, took the fifth spot. It grossed ₦7.5 million for the week, with impressive total earnings of ₦455.5 million since its release.
The Nollywood epic drama “Lakatabu“ came in sixth, earning ₦7.2 million for the week. Its total gross since release has reached ₦190.9 million.
“Inside Out 2” took seventh place with ₦6.3 million for the week and a total gross of ₦93.3 million since its June 14 release.
In eighth place was “Twisters,” released on July 19. It earned ₦4.8 million for the week, bringing its total gross to ₦31 million.
“A Quiet Place: Day One” held the ninth position, earning ₦4.6 million for the week. Since its June 28 premiere, it has grossed a total of ₦142 million.
Rounding out the top ten was “Muri and Ko,” directed by Biodun Stephen. It earned ₦3.2 million for the week, with a cumulative gross of ₦135 million since its June 14 release.
