Exciting news for fans of historical dramas! Netflix announced the premiere date for the upcoming biopic, “House of Ga’a,” directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters. The movie will be available to stream on July 26, 2024.

Along with the release date, Netflix also shared a special treat for fans on their Instagram page on June 20th. They posted never-before-seen behind-the-scenes images from the filming of “House of Ga’a.”

The post itself is captioned with a short and intriguing message: “Witness the rise and fall of a ruthless kingmaker. House of Ga’a is coming to Netflix, July 26.”

The upcoming Netflix biopic “House of Ga’a” delves into the life of Bashorun Gaha (or Gaa), a prominent figure in Yoruba history. Ruling as the Bashorun of the Oyo empire in the 18th century, Gaha’s story is one of power and manipulation. The film explores how he wielded deceit and even voodoo to maintain control over his people.

To bring this historical drama to life, director Bolanle Austen-Peters has assembled an impressive cast. Veteran Nollywood actors like Femi Branch and Dele Odule lend their talents. Popular contemporary stars such as Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham starred in this movie too. Other notable names on the cast list include Gabriel Afolayan, Bimbo Manuel, and Lateef Adedimeji.

“House of Ga’a” is part of a growing trend for Austen-Peters.

Passionate about educating younger audiences about Nigerian history and culture, she’s increasingly turning her focus to biopics. Earlier in 2024, she directed “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti,” a biopic chronicling the life of the influential political activist. “House of Ga’a” looks set to continue this important cinematic movement, showcasing a captivating chapter in Yoruba history to a global audience on Netflix.

In an interview, she said,

“For me, growing up you hear a lot about American heroes, you hear about Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, and Winnie Mandela, you’re asking yourself, ‘Where are the Nigerian heroes?’ It’s important that we begin to tell those stories. A lot of our children do not have that historical perspective. They don’t get these stories, because we’re not producing enough of them.”

Things Fall Apart: TV Series With Idris Elba in development | fab.ng

A24 Studios has greenlit an exciting new project: a TV series adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s seminal novel “Things Fall Apart.” Idris Elba, the acclaimed British actor, will take on the lead role and serve as an executive producer. This news, first reported exclusively by Variety Magazine, has sent ripples through the entertainment industry.

Elba isn’t working alone. He’s joining forces with David Oyelowo, another powerhouse talent. Together, they would bring Achebe’s masterpiece to the screen. Their collaboration is to honour the rich legacy of the Nigerian author’s work.

Chinua Achebe, born Albert Chinụalụmọgụ Achebe on November 16, 1930, left an indelible mark on world literature before his passing on March 21, 2013. Critics and readers alike hail him as a cornerstone of modern African literature.

His debut novel, “Things Fall Apart,” published in 1958, stands as a literary colossus. It has reached readers in over 60 languages. This made it one of the most widely studied, translated, and read African novels.

Achebe’s talent didn’t go unrecognized. “Things Fall Apart” earned him both the prestigious Nigerian National Merit Award and the Man Booker International Prize. The novel kicks off Achebe’s African Trilogy. “No Longer at Ease” and “Arrow of God” followed.

What’s more, this won’t be the first time “Things Fall Apart” graces the screen.

Previous adaptations include a film and a miniseries, with Pete Edochie memorably portraying the protagonist Okonkwo in the latter.

While no writer is attached to the project yet, the project boasts an impressive lineup of producers. Elba will executive produce alongside Gina Carter under their newly established 22Summers production banner.

David Oyelowo and Amanda N’Duka join the team as executive producers through Yoruba Saxon. The roster grows even more impressive with Ben Forkner, Dayo Ogunyemi, and Achebe Masterworks also taking on executive producer roles.

A24, known for its innovative and critically acclaimed productions, will be the studio backing this ambitious adaptation.

The official logline offers the first glimpse into how this beloved story will unfold on the small screen:

“The story follows Okonkwo (Elba), a fearless African warrior and leader, as British colonisers disrupt his world. His struggle to maintain power and tradition becomes a heart-wrenching confrontation, embodying the tension between strength, vulnerability, and adaptability.”

Idris Elba continues to dominate both the small and big screens.

His performance in Apple’s “Hijack” recently earned him an Emmy nomination. Elba’s portrayal in the British crime thriller “Luther” previously garnered him four Emmy nods.

Earlier this year, he expanded his producing portfolio by partnering with Mo Abudu for the film “Dust to Dreams.” Elba’s acting prowess shines through in roles from “Beasts of No Nation” to “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” and “The Harder They Fall.”

David Oyelowo’s production company, Yoruba Saxon, keeps pushing boundaries in the entertainment industry. They recently brought the Paramount+ series “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” to life, with Oyelowo himself stepping into the lead role of Reeves.

The company shows no signs of slowing down. They’re currently hard at work on the upcoming Apple TV+ series “Government Cheese.” Yoruba Saxon’s track record speaks for itself.

They’ve produced impactful features like “The After,” “The Water Man,” and “A United Kingdom.” The company also ventured into documentary filmmaking with “Ferguson Rising.”

Both Elba and Oyelowo continue to make waves as actors and producers. Their collaboration on “Things Fall Apart” will be a blend of their considerable talents and experience.

Farmer’s Bride will debut in cinemas across Francophone countries in Africa, including Senegal, Benin Republic, Togo, Burkina Faso, and Congo.

Earlier this year, Filmone Studios, the producers behind “Adire”, teased their latest original film. Now, audiences across these nations can look forward to experiencing the highly anticipated release in theatres soon.

FilmOne Studios leads Nigerian production companies by creating and producing stories that originate from Africa for local and global audiences. The Filmhouse Group, a prominent Media Entertainment Company in Lagos, Nigeria, encompasses FilmOne Studios.

Farmer’s Bride tells a poignant tale set in 1980s Ibadan. Odun, a wealthy but lonely farmer, seeks solace by marrying a young bride named Funmi. Their union faces challenges as Funmi struggles to find happiness and eventually begins a forbidden affair with Odun’s nephew. Their actions result in a haunting story of love, betrayal, and the supernatural.

Adebayo Tijani and Jack’enneth Opukeme direct the film. It features a stellar cast, including Tobi Bakre (“Gangs of Lagos”), Gbubemi Ejeye (“Far From Home”), Femi Branch (“House of Gaa”), Mercy Aigbe (“Ada Omo Mummy”), Efe Irele (“L.I.F.E”), and Wumi Toriola (“Aburo”).

Anakle Films, in collaboration with NBA All-Star Joel Embiid’s production company, Miniature Géant, and LeBron James’ athlete empowerment brand, Uninterrupted, is set to launch a captivating new narrative film titled “Backline”.

This inspiring film chronicles the journeys of African athletes as they tirelessly pursue their dreams of playing professional American football.

“Backline” draws inspiration from the true stories of current NFL players.

It follows two close friends from Nigeria as they navigate the challenges. They seize the opportunity of aspiring to play professional football in the United States. Editi Effiong (producer of the acclaimed “The Black Book”), wrote and directed this film.

“Backline” filming will commence in 2025. Production will take place in Nigeria and the United States, ensuring an authentic portrayal of the protagonists’ experiences.

Editi Effiong expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating,

“‘Backline’ is a story about the undefeatable strength of the human spirit, of hope, of friendship, and a drive to rise above one’s difficulties. From the moment I spoke to the young athletes who actually made the journey to play football in the U.S., telling this story has been a sweet obsession. In 2023, NBA All-Star Joel Embiid established Miniature Géan.

This is in partnership with The SpringHill Company, the renowned entertainment production firm that LeBron James and Maverick Carter founded. This studio specializes in telling the stories of individuals who have defied conventional expectations to achieve extraordinary success.

Embiid, himself a testament to this concept. Having risen from his hometown of Yaoundé, Cameroon, he became an NBA superstar and is uniquely positioned to champion such narratives.

Osi Umenyiora, a two-time Super Bowl champion, along with Editi Effiong and Anakle Films, serve as executive producers for the upcoming film “Backline”. Their collective expertise and passion for storytelling will undoubtedly contribute to the film’s impact and authenticity.
