FG disburses 2nd batch of ₦5b creative fund to Nollywood | Fab.ng

The Nigerian government just gave another round of creative fund to support the country’s creative industries. This money comes from a special fund called the Creative Fund, which was set up in December 2023 with the help of Providus Bank.

Fegho-x Umunubo, who works for the Vice President’s office and focuses on digital and creative businesses, announced the news on Instagram this week. This is the second batch of money to be given out from the ₦5 billion (around $12 million) total fund.

“Update: ₦5 Billion Creative Fund Second Batch Launch. Under the renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), we successfully launched the second batch of the N5Billion Creative Fund in partnership with Providus Bank at Eko Hotels and Suites last week Friday,” he said.

Following the successful disbursement of ₦1.5 billion to four actors/producers for their movie projects, we are excited to support even more creative projects. If you know someone looking for funding for their creative project, share this email address: [email protected],” he added.

The financial world hasn’t always paid much attention to Nigeria’s creative industries, like filmmaking. But things are changing. Afrobeats music has exploded in popularity worldwide. Streaming services like Netflix and Prime Video are putting big money into creating new Nigerian content.

This new interest is a double-edged sword.

On the one hand, it means more money is flowing into Nigerian creativity. This is especially good news for Nollywood, Nigeria’s giant film industry. The Creative Fund is a great example – it can help filmmakers and actors make even better movies.

But there’s a flip side. Some filmmakers might feel pressure to make movies that appeal to a global audience instead of focusing on stories Nigerians themselves want to see. The hope is that the Creative Fund can help filmmakers create content for Nigerians, while still attracting attention from around the world. If managed well, this fund could be a game-changer for Nollywood!

Burna Boy sets Spotify record for opening day streams | Fab.ng

Burna Boy, a Nigerian musician, has become one of the world’s biggest artists since 2018. That year, his song ‘YE’ became very popular internationally. Since then, his songs, albums, and concerts have set many records for African music.

Recently, Burna Boy has set another record. His new song ‘Higher’ has achieved the most streams on its first day for a solo single on Spotify Nigeria. This information comes from TurnTable Charts, a company that tracks music popularity.

On its first full day after release, ‘Higher’ was played 530,792 times on Spotify Nigeria. This number is higher than the previous record. The old record was held by another Nigerian artist, Wizkid, whose song ‘Diamond’ was played 518,000 times on its first day.

Burna Boy’s ‘Higher’ also set a new record for the most streams on the first day for a solo song by any African artist. This information was shared by Chart Data, a platform that reports on music chart news. Before ‘Higher’, Burna Boy held this record with his 2023 song ‘City Boy’, which was nominated for a Grammy award.

These achievements show that Burna Boy is a global superstar. His music is setting new standards for African artists and is becoming more popular worldwide.

Burna Boy has been setting many records throughout the year.

One of his biggest achievements was his concert at the London Stadium. He became the first African artist to sell out all tickets for this venue twice. He was also the first African artist to headline two stadium concerts in the United Kingdom.

In addition to his success in the UK, Burna Boy has set records in North America. He now holds the record for the highest-grossing concert by an African artist in the United States. This means his concert made more money than any other African artist’s concert in the US. He also set a record in Canada, achieving the highest-grossing tour by an African artist in that country.

All these accomplishments demonstrate Burna Boy’s growing popularity and influence in the global music industry. He is not only succeeding as an African artist but is competing at the highest levels of international music. His continued success is helping to bring more attention to African music on the world stage.

Burna Boy’s journey from his breakout hit ‘YE’ to his current status as a record-breaking global star shows his growth as an artist and the increasing global appeal of African music. His achievements are opening doors for other African artists and changing perceptions of African music worldwide.

“Lakatabu” Leads Nollywood As Hollywood Dominated Box Office In June

'Lakatabu' leads Nollywood in box office all through June | Fab.ng

Nigerian movie lovers and “Lakatabu” lovers get ready for exciting news! The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) has released new data about movie performances in Nigerian cinemas for June 2024. This information shows an interesting trend in the Nigerian film industry.

Throughout the entire month of June, Hollywood movies were the most popular at Nigerian box offices. They consistently earned more money than Nigerian-made films, known as Nollywood movies. This pattern highlights that many Nigerian moviegoers prefer American films over local productions.

However, one Nollywood film did particularly well during this period. From June 21 to June 27, 2024, a movie called “Lakatabu” was the highest-earning Nigerian film. It made almost 65 million Naira at the box office, which is a significant amount. In fact, “Lakatabu” was the second-highest-grossing movie overall during this time, with a total of 64.8 million Naira.

“Lakatabu” is mainly in the Yoruba language, one of Nigeria’s major languages. It was both directed and produced by Odunlade Adekola, who is also an actor. Adekola plays the main character in the movie as well.

The story of “Lakatabu” is quite intense. It follows the main character, Lakatabu, who is an armed robber with magical powers. He causes a lot of fear and harm, terrorizing, kidnapping, and even murdering people. However, the plot takes an unexpected turn when Lakatabu starts receiving threats from his rivals. The film explores the challenges Lakatabu faces, the fear he creates in others, and what happens as a result of his power.

Despite “Lakatabu’s” success, it wasn’t the top-earning movie overall. That honour went to a Hollywood action comedy called “Bad Boys: Ride or Die”. This movie, starring famous actors Martin Lawrence and Will Smith, earned 62.2 million Naira.

The last time a Nollywood movie was the highest-grossing film in Nigeria was back in May 2024. During the week of May 17 to May 23, a movie called “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti“, directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters, earned almost 47 million Naira.

Three other Nollywood movies also made it onto the list of top-earning films, though they didn’t make as much money as “Lakatabu”. These were “Muri and Ko” (directed by Biodun Stephen), which earned 22.3 million Naira; “Criminal” (directed by first-time filmmaker Dolapo Adigun), which made 4.1 million Naira; and “Offshoot” (directed by Ayeny T. Steve), which brought in 2.7 million Naira.

Several other Hollywood movies were also popular in Nigerian cinemas during this time. These included action and animated films like “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”, “Inside Out 2”, “The Watchers”, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”, and “The Garfield Movie”.

This data from CEAN provides valuable insights into the current state of the Nigerian film industry and the preferences of Nigerian moviegoers.
