William Troost-Ekong from Nigeria was named the Player of the Tournament for AFCON 2023, even though Nigeria didn’t win the final against Ivory Coast.

Troost-Ekong, who is the vice captain of Nigeria, was given the Player of the Tournament award because he played exceptionally well and showed great leadership during the games.

Even though Nigeria lost in the final against Ivory Coast, Troost-Ekong’s performance during the entire tournament helped Nigeria reach the final. Because of this, he received the top individual honour.

A Defender with a knack for goals

Troost-Ekong plays for PAOK and plays a crucial role for the Super Eagles team. He scored three goals during the tournament, which made him one of the top scorers for the team, tying with Ademola Lookman.

Troost-Ekong’s skill was evident in key moments, such as confidently taking a penalty against Ivory Coast in the group stage and scoring an important goal in the semifinal against South Africa. These goals were not only unusual for a defender but also showed his ability to be versatile and dangerous in the opponent’s penalty area.

Standing Tall Among the Elite

In the final match against Ivory Coast, Nigeria lost 2-1, missing out on the championship title. Despite the disappointment, Troost-Ekong’s exceptional performances were recognised, and he was awarded Player of the Tournament.

Troost-Ekong earned this honour because he consistently showed skill, determination, and leadership during the competition. By winning this award, Troost-Ekong outshone tough opponents like Ivory Coast’s Seko Fofana, proving the substantial influence he had throughout the tournament.

 A Beacon of excellence

Troost-Ekong’s recognition as the Player of the Tournament at AFCON 2023 is a symbol of excellence and a source of pride for Nigeria, despite the team’s narrow miss in winning the title. His accomplishments tell about the significance of a strong defence combined with offensive contributions in modern football.

Additionally, this award highlights the collective strength of the Super Eagles and the exceptional talent that Troost-Ekong brought to the African football event.

William Troost-Ekong being named the AFCON 2023 Player of the Tournament is a well-deserved tribute to his remarkable efforts for Nigeria’s campaign. Although the team fell short of claiming the top prize, Troost-Ekong’s performances will be remembered as a defining aspect of the tournament.

His legacy as one of the standout players in AFCON 2023 is now firmly established, serving as inspiration for future generations and adding a new chapter to the history of Nigerian football.

Skepta Features Portable In "Tony Montana" | Fab.ng

British-Nigerian rapper Skepta is teaming up with rising Nigerian star Portable for a new Afrobeats song titled “Tony Montana.” This collaboration marks Skepta’s exploration of the Afrobeats genre, potentially connecting with his Nigerian roots.

The song, produced by award-winning JAE5, follows Portable’s “Tony Montana of London” EP, released earlier in 2024. Notably, Portable’s visit to the UK in the same year led to this collaboration with Skepta.

Fans on social media are excited about the single, particularly impressed by Portable’s contribution. His melodic chorus is a departure from his usual “hoarse street music” style.

“Tony Montana” is not Skepta’s first foray into exploring collaborations with Nigerian artists. Earlier this year, he released “Jangrova,” featuring Nigerian rapper Odumodublvck and British-Ghanaian actor Idris Elba.

Interestingly, Skepta recently made his directorial debut with the movie “Tribal Mark,” focusing on a British-Nigerian hitman. He reportedly decided to create this film as a response to discussions about casting a black actor for the role of James Bond.

“Tony Montana” serves as one of the lead singles for Skepta’s upcoming sixth album, “Knife & Fork,” expected to be released later in 2024. This collaboration and album anticipation mark a promising year for the British-Nigerian artist.
