The Portland Thorns, a top team in the National Women’s Soccer League, have secured the services of talented Super Falcons defender Nicole Payne on a year-long loan agreement.
This exciting acquisition brings a dynamic player to the Thorns’ roster. It also bolsters their defensive line and adds versatility to their gameplay.
Portland Thorns FC secured young talent Nicole Payne on a loan deal from French powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain. Despite joining the Parisian club last summer, the 23-year-old American defender has found opportunities limited amidst fierce competition within the squad.
Seeking more consistent playing time, Payne now embarks on a new chapter in the vibrant atmosphere of the National Women’s Soccer League. She is eager to showcase her skills and contribute to the Thorns’ success.
According to General Manager and President of Soccer Operations, Karina LeBlanc, Nicole “is a young and dynamic defender who has the ability to impact the game on both sides of the ball.”
“In speaking with Nicole, it was discovered that the Thorns are a club she has a deep admiration for. Her desire to represent this city and this crest is what we want from any new signing. When presented with this opportunity, she welcomed it with open arms. We are so thrilled to have her with us.”
Mike Norris, the head coach, also added, “Nicole is an exciting addition to our roster; she is a defender first and foremost but also has an incredible drive and desire to get forward and impact the game higher up the field.”
“We look forward to welcoming Nicole to the Thorns family.”
Recall that Nicole Payne represented the US at the U17 and U19 levels before switching allegiance to Nigeria, her parents’ homeland. This decision led to her participation in the 2022 Women’s African Cup of Nations, where she gained international experience.
Payne’s talent didn’t go unnoticed by European clubs. Paris Saint-Germain snapped her up in July 2023, offering her a chance to compete at the highest level. Though her appearances were limited, she gained valuable experience training alongside world-class players.
Now, a loan move to the Portland Thorns brings Payne back to American soil.
This is a homecoming of sorts, and she’s eager to make an impact.
