Exciting news for Nigerian movie lovers! Three films—Mami Wata, Orah, and All The Colours Of The World Are Between Black and White—have been chosen to join the prestigious 2024 Joburg Film Festival in South Africa. This announcement, made earlier yesterday, on February 12th, highlights the growing recognition of Nigerian filmmaking on the international stage.

The Joburg Film Festival is a renowned event showcasing different cinematic voices from around the globe. This year, the organisers carefully selected over 60 films from 30 different countries, demonstrating their commitment to fostering connections and collaborations between local and international filmmakers.

The inclusion of these three Nigerian films represents a significant achievement for the country’s film industry. It is proof of the creativity and talent of Nigerian filmmakers and serves as an exciting opportunity for them to share their stories with a wider audience.

This selection also bodes well for the future of Nigerian cinema, suggesting continued international recognition and appreciation for its unique perspectives and narratives.

“Showcasing a diverse range of compelling films from both local and international filmmakers, set against the vibrant backdrop of Johannesburg, this year’s festival promises to captivate audiences with its dynamic selection of cinematic gems including some of the finest films from over 30 countries,” the press release said.

One of the standouts among the Nigerian films selected is Cj Obasi’s “Mami Wata,” a visually striking black-and-white film set in Iyi village, where life revolves around the worship of the powerful mermaid deity, Mami Wata. But harmony crumbles when a warlord seizes control, leading to the disappearance of children and casting a shadow over the community.

With their village in peril, two determined sisters rise to the challenge. Their mission: to save their people and restore the glory of Mami Wata to the land.

Three exciting Nigerian films have found their way to the 2024 Joburg Film Festival. Let’s take a closer look at each one:

Mami Wata: Produced by Oge Obasi, this film boasts a cast led by the legendary Rita Edochie, alongside Uzoamaka Aniunoh, Evelyne Ily Juhen, Kelechi Udegbe, and Tough Bone. Get ready for a captivating story, the details of which remain under wraps for now.

All the Colours of the World Are Between Black and White: This tender tale, directed and written by Babatunde Apalowo, follows Bambino and Bawa, two men drawn together by a photography competition in Lagos. As they explore the city and connect on a deeper level, they face the societal pressures on homosexuality surrounding their growing affection.

Tope Tedela, Riyo David, Martha Ehinome Orhiere, and Uchechika Elumelu bring this story to life, which was produced by Damilola Orimogunje.

Orah: Directed by Canadian-Nigerian filmmaker Lonzo Nzekwe, this movie delves into the life of a taxi driver in Canada seeking revenge against a Nigerian drug trafficking ring responsible for her son’s death. Oyin Oladejo, Somkele Iyamah-Idhalama, O.C. Ukeje, and a strong supporting cast bring this powerful story to the screen.

With various themes, talented casts, and accomplished filmmakers behind them, these three Nigerian films will show the breadth and dynamics of the country’s cinema at the upcoming Joburg Film Festival.

Mark your calendars and get ready!
