“My Mother Used Music To Blackmail Me” – Ayra Starr

Ayra Starr Said her Mother Used Music To Blackmail Her | Fab.ng

In a recent interview, Nigerian singer Ayra Starr, a rising star in the music industry, shared a unique perspective on her journey to success. She revealed that her mother played a significant role in her career path, encouraging her to pursue music under certain conditions.

Ayra Starr explained that her mother strongly supported her musical aspirations but emphasised the importance of completing her education first. This meant Ayra had to balance her musical dreams with her commitment to attending school.

According to the singer, her university education began at the age of 14.

Being admitted to university at the young age of 14, Ayra Starr faced a crucial decision. Her mother, while supportive, emphasised completing her education before pursuing a music career. In Nigeria, most students finish secondary school around 15 or 16, the pop singer said. Ayra, dreaming of becoming a teenage pop star, knew waiting any longer would hinder her aspirations.

With unwavering determination, she joined her older brother and enrolled in the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination. While not aiming for the most prestigious universities, her score met her mother’s approval and secured her admission into a reputable university for a three-year programme in international relations.

Ayra humorously described her mother’s approach as “blackmail,” using music as a motivator. This included the decision to relocate from Benin Republic to Lagos, “the land of music,” a suggestion Ayra initially resisted.

However, she eventually understood her mother’s point of view. Immediately after graduation, Ayra actively pursued her music passion, starting with online covers. This dedication and perseverance ultimately led to her being signed that same year.
