The just concluded Africa Cup of Nations took place in Ivory Coast, and there was an incredible roller coaster ride for the hosts as they went from near-total embarrassment to champions of the continent.
The mighty Elephants of Ivory Coast triumphed over Nigeria in a thrilling match on Sunday, taking home the Africa Cup of Nations trophy for a record-breaking third time! After falling behind early, the Ivorians showed true grit and determination, coming back with two goals to snatch victory from the claws of the Super Eagles. It was a dramatic turnaround and a historic win for the Ivory Coast team and their fans.
While Nigeria hadn’t lifted the trophy since 2013, they were hungry for their fourth win, having triumphed in 1980, 1994, and 2013. Cote d’Ivoire, champions in 1992 and 2015, also dreamed of glory. The match kicked off with a bang! Nigeria’s defender, William Troost-Ekong, thumped in a header in the 38th minute, sending the crowd into a frenzy. But Cote d’Ivoire wouldn’t give up easily.
Even though they were behind, Ivory Coast kept their heads held high and controlled most of the game (they had the ball 65% of the time!). They kept working together beautifully, passing well and moving the ball quickly. They fought back and equalised in the 62nd minute with a powerful header from Franck Kessie. He ran to the corner, hand raised in a triumphant salute, as the orange-clad crowd erupted in joy. Both goals were headed beauties—exciting displays of aerial skill!
The final saw Ivory Coast’s relentless pressure finally pay off! Haller’s goal from Adingra’s cross sent the packed 60,000-seat stadium into a frenzy at the obvious victory. Haller, who had already scored once after overcoming an ankle injury, found the net, and this goal was especially meaningful as it came just a year after his recovery from cancer.

Nigeria, despite their strong defence, let in the same number of goals in the final as they had in the entire tournament put together. Their coach, José Peseiro, had hoped for a strong defence to bring home their fourth title.
“We played great, but Ivory Coast was just better today,” Peseiro admitted. He felt the pressure on his players, praising the home team for staying calm under fire.
