Tobi Amusan is raising the bar higher in 2024. The record-breaking athlete in the women’s 100m hurdles just surpassed Gloria Alozie’s 25-year-old 60-meter hurdles indoor record on Saturday at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor.
Tobi Amusan, 26, broke Gloria Alozie’s 25-year-old record of 7.82 seconds, clocking it at 7.77 seconds.
She came in first in the event final, ahead of American Nia Ali and Irishwoman Sarah Lavin, who came in second and third.
The season’s world top list has placed Amusan second after Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas, who ran 7.75 last week at Corky Classics in Lubbock, Texas.

Amusan had a tumultuous year in 2023. She was slammed with an allegation of “missing three tests in 12 months” by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) and faced a provisional suspension as a result. This meant that she was unable to defend her World Championship title in Hungary and ended up finishing in sixth place because she arrived just three days before the competition started.

Nevertheless, she bounced back towards the end of 2023, winning her third consecutive Diamond League medal. Amusan, who is also known as ‘The Express,’ is preparing for the 2024 Olympic Games, scheduled to take place in Paris starting on July 26.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has praised Amusan’s performance at the Astana Indoor Meet, where she set the new African record in 60-meter hurdles. For AFN, this is a positive sign for the upcoming Africa Games and the Paris 2024 Olympics.
