“The After,” produced by Misan Harriman, a British Nigerian photographer and filmmaker, has won the Best Short Film category at the 2024 African-American Film Critics Award (AAFCA).
The award winners and their top ten films of the year were announced by the organizers on Monday, January 15, 2024. The selections were made based on the “outstanding achievement” in cinema during the relevant period. AAFCA’s 100+ members voted for the winners, who will be honoured at the 15th annual AAFCA event on February 21, 2024, at the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills.
“The After,” co-written by Harriman and John Julius Schwabach, narrates the tale of a ride-share driver, portrayed by David Oyelowo, who discovers solace through an unexpected encounter with a passenger. The cast also includes Jessica Plummer, Sule Rimi, Ravi Singh, and Amelie Dokubo.
In a press statement, Gil Robertson, the president and co-founder, highlighted that the past year has seen increased acceptance of showcasing a diverse array of African stories.

According to him,
“It’s become a tradition to announce our winners on MLK (Martin Luther King) Day. And what a great year for cinema showcasing the vibrant tapestry of Black storytelling, where diversity is not a trend, but an imperative. This year’s winners have inspired, challenged, and moved us and we are delighted to celebrate them and their cultural impact.”
Additionally, the film has earned a spot in the Live Action Short Film category for the 96th Academy Awards.
Since its premiere on October 25, 2023, “The After” has continued to be available for streaming on Netflix.
