Mo Abudu, a well-known Nigerian filmmaker, made an impressive appearance at this year’s Governors Awards, held by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscars).
On Instagram, Abudu shared photos and videos from the event, which took place in Los Angeles, California. The Governors Awards are an annual ceremony that honours individuals for exceptional performances as determined by the Academy’s Board of Governors.
This event will take place before the Oscars ceremony in March 2024, where exceptional films from 2023 will be recognised. Such events, according to Abudu, present a key channel for Nollywood to make its imprint on the international scene.
In her words,
“It’s in these rooms that connections are forged, ideas spark, and collaborations bloom, crucial for the growth of our creative economy on our continent.”
The psychological films “Iyawo Mi” and “Her Perfect Life,” which marked her directorial debut, were recognised as eligible contenders in the Oscars Live Action Short Film Category in November 2023.

“Iyawo Mi (My Wife)” tells the touching story of Kunle, a young married man living in Lagos’ impoverished downtown district. When he arrives home, he finds his wife, Eniola, in a state of hallucination, yelling at their children and neighbours and threatening to harm everyone.
Meanwhile, “Her Perfect Life” dives into the life of Onajite Johnson Ibrahim, a woman who appears to have it all. She has a flourishing job, a booming business, a loving husband, and two bright and beautiful children at the age of 39. However, beneath the allegedly immaculate appearance, she considers suicide.
Both short films had a limited theatrical premiere in October 2023 at Ebony Life Cinemas.
