Misan Harriman, a British Nigerian photographer renowned for being the first black man to shoot a magazine cover for British Vogue, has achieved another milestone with his short film titled “The After“.
The film has been shortlisted for the 96th Academy Awards in the Live Action Short Film category.
Out of the 187 films that qualified for consideration in this category, “The After” is among the 15 selected titles from around the world. The final nominations, comprising five films, will be announced on Tuesday, January 23, 2024.
“The After”, which explores themes of resilience, courage, and the indomitable spirit of hope, made its debut on Netflix on October 25, 2023.

Co-written by Harriman and John Julius Schwabach, the film narrates the story of a ride-share driver, portrayed by David Oyelowo, who finds solace through an unexpected encounter with a passenger. The cast includes Jessica Plummer and Amelie Dokubo.
In the same category, two other short films, “Iyawo Mi” and “Her Perfect Life,” both by Mo Abudu, did not make the final list.

“Iyawo Mi” depicts the heart-wrenching story of Kunle, a young married man in Lagos, while “Her Perfect Life” delves into the seemingly flawless life of Onajite Johnson Ibrahim, a woman contemplating ending it all despite her outward success.

Although “Iyawo Mi” and “Her Perfect Life” had a brief cinematic run at Ebony Life Cinemas in October 2023, fans now await further information on the possibility of another screening.
This development follows the exclusion of “Mami Wata” from the 96th Oscars International Feature Film category.
