American gospel music has long been a primary source of inspiration for gospel enthusiasts, but there is a growing trend among African listeners to rediscover and embrace their indigenous gospel sounds.

African gospel music, with its soulful melodies and uplifting messages, deeply resonates with audiences across the continent. Rooted in cultural nuances and spiritual aspirations of local communities, it incorporates native languages, traditional rhythms, and music styles, creating an authentic sound that connects profoundly with African listeners.

In recent years, African gospel music has emerged as a potent force for social change, with artists leveraging their platforms to address issues such as poverty, injustice, and corruption. This movement gives voice to the voiceless, advocating for a more equitable society.

The continent’s gospel music scene, from the dynamic choirs of South Africa to the soulful voices of Nigeria, has found immense success, offering comfort, hope, and a profound connection to faith to millions of listeners.

Spotify’s Wrapped data for 2023 sheds light on the thriving gospel music scene in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), unveiling the artists and tracks resonating deeply with African audiences and fostering spiritual growth and community connections.

South Africa’s vibrant gospel scene is dominated by two leading choirs: Joyous Celebration and Spirit of Praise. Joyous Celebration, formed post-apartheid, stands out as the most streamed African gospel artist in SSA, with their powerful song ‘Ndenzel’ Uncedo Hymn 377 – Live’ securing the top position.

At the recent launch party celebrating his new album “Vultures 1,” renowned musician Kanye West welcomed his eldest daughter, North West, to join him on stage.

The ten-year-old North showcased her talents alongside her father at the Accor Arena in Paris on Sunday. Together, they performed the song “Talking/Once Again,” much to the delight of the audience.

Videos shared online show North confidently sang along to the track as it played, while she and her father shared a fun and energetic dance routine onstage.

During the performance, North briefly folded her hands in a prayerful gesture, repeating the words “Bless me, bless me” with sincerity.

Meanwhile, Kanye, who shares four children with his former spouse, Kim Kardashian, remained silent while the song played. Instead, he danced and gestured towards the audience.

Both North and the 46-year-old Grammy award winner wore entirely black attire for the event.

Kanye West chose an outfit he had worn previously, consisting of a jacket, pants, and shoes. He completed the look with a distinctive “Friday the 13th” face mask.

Upon removing the mask, one could see a white image of a crucified figure embroidered on the hood underneath. This specific design choice echoed the one he showcased at the Super Bowl earlier in the month.

North West, mirroring her father’s style, sported a pair of baggy pants, chunky shoes, a graphic T-shirt, and a puffer coat with a white stripe running down one sleeve. To top it all off, she wore a large, fluffy trapper hat.

The “Flashing Lights” rapper has been exploring various European cities with his wife, Bianca Censori. They are on a celebratory tour to mark the release of their new album, which they collaborated on with Ty Dolla $ign. Though the couple has been sharing pictures and videos of their travels on social media, it remains unclear when their eldest child joined them on their European adventure.

Ruger & BNXN In New Single "Romeo Must Die" | Fab.ng

BNXN and Ruger have finally put their two-year-long feud behind them with their collaborative song release, “Romeo Must Die (RMD).” This single marks a new chapter for both artists and signifies a fresh start in their relationship.

The song, released on February 29th, 2024, comes with a music video filmed in Malibu, California. The video showcases the artists enjoying themselves amidst the scenic backdrop of the ocean, palm trees, and luxury cars.

While fans were initially curious about the musical direction the song would take, given BNXN’s lean towards R&B and Ruger’s focus on dancehall, the artists have successfully blended their styles. Produced by Kukbeats, the song celebrates their success and throws subtle shade at their critics.

The song “Romeo Must Die” is a direct reference to the popular action movie released in the year 2000. The film starred martial arts star Jet Li and the late R&B singer Aaliyah.

This collaboration between BNXN and Ruger is a significant one, as it’s the first song they’ve released together in 2024, and it follows a successful year for both artists in 2023.

An important thing to note is that Ruger recently left his previous label, Jonzing World. Because of this, “Romeo Must Die” is his first song released under his own new label called Blown Boy.

Skepta Features Portable In New Afrobeats Hit “Tony Montana”

Skepta Features Portable In "Tony Montana" | Fab.ng

British-Nigerian rapper Skepta is teaming up with rising Nigerian star Portable for a new Afrobeats song titled “Tony Montana.” This collaboration marks Skepta’s exploration of the Afrobeats genre, potentially connecting with his Nigerian roots.

The song, produced by award-winning JAE5, follows Portable’s “Tony Montana of London” EP, released earlier in 2024. Notably, Portable’s visit to the UK in the same year led to this collaboration with Skepta.

Fans on social media are excited about the single, particularly impressed by Portable’s contribution. His melodic chorus is a departure from his usual “hoarse street music” style.

“Tony Montana” is not Skepta’s first foray into exploring collaborations with Nigerian artists. Earlier this year, he released “Jangrova,” featuring Nigerian rapper Odumodublvck and British-Ghanaian actor Idris Elba.

Interestingly, Skepta recently made his directorial debut with the movie “Tribal Mark,” focusing on a British-Nigerian hitman. He reportedly decided to create this film as a response to discussions about casting a black actor for the role of James Bond.

“Tony Montana” serves as one of the lead singles for Skepta’s upcoming sixth album, “Knife & Fork,” expected to be released later in 2024. This collaboration and album anticipation mark a promising year for the British-Nigerian artist.
