Spotify has designated Nigerian rapper, singer, songwriter, and record executive, Olamide Adedeji, popularly known as Olamide, as his generation’s most influential street pop artist. Spotify’s West Africa editor, Benewaah Boateng, revealed this in a statement on Thursday, December 21, 2023, in Lagos.

Boateng highlighted the remarkable rise of the sub-genre “Street Pop” in Nigeria, describing Olamide as the most influential figure in elevating it to mainstream recognition.

Olamide, known for hit singles like “Eni Duro,” has played a significant role in popularizing street pop, introducing dance styles like “Shakiti Bobo” and street jargon such as “Baddo Sneh” and “Pepper Dem.”

Through his record label YBNL, Olamide has been instrumental in discovering and nurturing Nigeria’s brightest street pop talents.

Street pop, originating from a fusion of Afrobeats, Highlife, Hip-hop, Fuji, Apala, indigenous sounds, and contemporary elements, features engaging rhythm, fast-paced beats, and lyrics reflecting the everyday lives of Nigerians facing street challenges.

Boateng emphasized the profound connection of Street Pop to the harsh realities of everyday life in Nigeria. Olamide secured the ninth spot in the list of top 10 artists in Nigeria, with his recent project, “Unruly,” receiving widespread acclaim. The track “Gaza” from the project resonated exceptionally well with audiences.

Seyi Vibez, a rising force in the Nigerian street pop scene, gained prominence in 2022 and continued his success in 2023. He sold out his concert at the O2 Indigo Hall in the UK, and his song “Chance” became popular with Gen-Zs and millennials.

Zinoleesky, another notable street pop artist, made substantial contributions to the genre with his skilful melodies and compelling storytelling, securing a spot among Nigeria’s top 15 most streamed artists.

Boateng observed that as street pop artists explore new creative frontiers, the genre is poised for exponential growth in the years to come, potentially becoming the next global phenomenon akin to Afrobeats.

“Right after the launch show on Sunday, a new activity will start. This season has high stakes. It’s going to move fast, and it will unravel right from Sunday night when we launch the show.”

HoH Ballot, which will determine the first Head of House on Monday, July 29th will replace the usual Head of House challenge.

A series of challenges, including the Custodian Lock-In, Immunity Challenge, and nominations will follow through. The organizers are aiming to create a more dynamic and exciting experience for both contestants and viewers.

4. Fans can win too

In addition to the contestants competing for the grand prize, viewers have the chance to win as well through the Fave Lock-In. By predicting the winning pairs in the Immunity Challenge, lucky fans can win ₦1 million every week.

The new season of Big Brother Naija premieres on Sunday, July 28th on Africa Magic channels. To participate in voting and the Fave Lock-In, fans must download the new MyDStv app before the launch date. The old MyDStv app will no longer be available.
