Nigeria and Ghana to sign memorandum on capacity building

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) on Cabotage implementation, enforcement processes and capacity building.

The Director-General of NIMASA, Dr Dakuku Peterside, said this when he received the Director-General of GMA, Mr Kwame Owusu who visited him at the NIMASA headquarters in Lagos.

According to a statement by NIMASA , areas being considered in the MoU are: regular knowledge sharing and knowledge transfer; capacity building initiatives; and Cabotage implementation/Enforcement processes.

The Coastal and Inland Shipping Act, otherwise known as the Cabotage Act was enacted in 2003.

The Act was enacted to restrict the use of foreign vessels in domestic coastal trade to promote the development of indigenous (Nigerian) tonnage.

According to Peterside, in carrying out its statutory functions, NIMASA is strengthened by three important Acts of Parliament namely: the Merchant Shipping Act, the NIMASA Act and the Cabotage Act.

He told the Ghanaian team that NIMASA needed to actualise its core mandates of shipping development, maritime safety and security, and maritime labour services, among others.

Peterside said that NIMASA “is currently repositioning and rebranding for greater efficiency, geared toward realising a virile maritime sector in line with global best practices’’.

“We have taken a number of initiatives to reform, restructure and reposition the organisation.”

“Our vision is to focus on becoming the foremost maritime administration in Africa and advancing Nigeria’s maritime goal,’’ the director-general said.

Earlier, Owusu commended the doggedness of the management of NIMASA in repositioning the Nigerian maritime sector and by extension, the entire Africa.

“We are here to strengthen the bilateral relationships that exist between both countries; and to learn international best practices from you.”

“We are also here to learn and share part of the experiences of NIMASA so that we can replicate same in our country,’’ he said.

Bobrisky Released On Bail After Denying 15 Million Naira Bribery Allegations

Bobrisky granted bail after denying N15m bribery allegation | fab.ng

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recently granted bail to Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, following his detention.

On Thursday night, Bobrisky was apprehended and removed from a KLM flight bound for Amsterdam at Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport while attempting to travel to London.

Subsequently, Bobrisky took to social media to inform his followers about his arrest, claiming to have sustained injuries during the incident.

He posted, “Nigerians, help me, EFCC just arrested me. I’m badly injured.”

After his arrest, officials transported him to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja for questioning over alleged bribery claims involving the commission.

The allegations arose when social media critic Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, released a voice note reportedly featuring Bobrisky’s voice. In the recording, Bobrisky allegedly claimed he had bribed EFCC officials with N15 million to drop money laundering charges.

However, late on Friday, November 1, authorities processed Bobrisky’s bail, and he regained his freedom shortly after. EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed the release on Saturday but declined to provide additional information.

A source close to the case disclosed that Bobrisky denied all bribery allegations in his official statement. He also challenged the voice note’s authenticity, urging the individual who shared it to prove the claims.

According to the source, Bobrisky asserted that no EFCC official had solicited money from him and insisted he had not offered any bribe.

Through this statement, Bobrisky maintained his innocence, asserting that the bribery accusations were baseless. Meanwhile, the EFCC has yet to comment further on the case. This leaves questions about the voice note’s origins and the nature of the allegations still unresolved.
