Lagos State has taken a bold move to rewrite environmental management processes in Nigeria as it awards several contracts and concessions for the provision of city cleaning, landfill engineering, waste management and treatment services to leading global waste and resource management companies including Interwaste and Visionscape.
The contracts, which were in line with the vision of the state to be Africa’s cleanest and greenest city by 2025, were awarded after a successful tender process by the Lagos State Government, supported by international and local waste management consultants.
Under the terms of the multi-year contracts and concessions, the newly appointed global companies and their local partners will provide vital infrastructure by designing, building and managing the first engineered sanitary landfill in Nigeria. They will also provide waste collection, processing and disposal services for residential properties, roads and highways. Beyond collection and disposal, there are also plans to incorporate waste to energy plants into the integrated waste management plans of the State.
Lagos To build Nigeria’s First Mechanised Landfill
Lagos, the fifth largest economy in Africa is also Nigeria’s commercial hub. By 2020, it is projected that the urban population of the megacity will exceed 29 million inhabitants who will be the direct beneficiaries of the new environmental reforms through dependable sanitation services and better health conditions.
The mechanised landfill and rejuvenation of the waste management process are part of the detailed efforts to put Lagos State on the global environmental map by creating a sustainable environment for all its citizens to drive the agenda to drive the Africa’s cleanest and greenest city agenda.
The state Governor, Mr Akinwumi Ambode recently signed a new environmental legislation into law to regulate the previously hydra-headed waste management and sanitation sectors in the state.
In the new dispensation, British company, Taylor will supply communal metal waste bins while German based Schaefer, one of the world’s largest total solutions providers and components manufacturers secured a large bin order. Schaefer offers the most technologically advanced waste carts on the market.
Other companies will provide new services that include mechanized and manual street sweeping, marine waste management and drainage management across the State. These companies include Portland Energy, Wastecare Solutions and Resources Management Limited and ABC Sanitation Solutions.
A sizeable portion of the work will be executed by Visionscape which will include the dispatch of a large fleet of multi-dimensional vehicles and a waste management system supported by geo-location technology that Is expected to significantly improve service delivery and collection services for the residents of Lagos State. In addition, the company will also be implementing its proprietary technology driven performance management system that drives values and aligns decision-making with the pivot points of the complex sanitation business model.
The initiative targets to create around 35,000 jobs through the overhaul of waste management infrastructure such as transfer loading stations, incinerators and constructing material recovery facilities by the end of the first phase of implementation.
“The capability and credibility of our chosen partners in progress further demonstrates our commitment to ensuring global best practice in waste management and recycling, and in ensuring a sustainable environment for generations to come”, said Mr. Ambode, the Governor of Lagos State.
