The former Man City forward re-posted an image of the Nintendo character Super Mario on his Instagram account that contained the words “jumps like a black man and grabs coins like a jew”.

The 28 year-old was widely criticized for the image which was later deleted. However, he reacted angrily to the suggestion that his message was anti-Semitic.

Ryan Babel

Former Liverpool forward Ryan Babel became the first player to be sanctioned for misuse of Social Media in January 2011, when he was fined £10,000 by the FA for tweeting a photo-shopped picture of referee Howard Webb wearing a Manchester United shirt.

Adrian Mutu

Mutu was left out of Romania’s squad for a World Cup play-off match against Greece and he reacted by posting a photo-shopped picture of Mr Bean’s head grafted on the body of the then Romania Coach Victor Piturca. He was never called back into the national team again

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was fined £45,000 by the FA for improper conduct after he re-tweeted a post which described Ashley Cole as a ‘choc ice’, after Cole gave evidence on behalf of John Terry in the racial abuse case which involved Ferdinand’s brother Anton.

Darren Bent

During his days at Tottenham, Darren Bent took to Twitter to lam-bast Spurs chairman Daniel Levy after he was said to be on the list of players to be offloaded.

“Do I wanna go Hull City NO. Do I wanna go stoke NO do I wanna go Sunderland YES so stop f—— around, Levy,” he said.

Bent was handed a heavy fine for his remarks.
