Nollywood actress and socialite, Regina Daniels, found herself at the centre of public discourse following her stance on the nationwide “10 Days of Rage” protests. On the initial day of the demonstrations, she took to Instagram to advocate for peace and unity, emphasizing the need for collective responsibility in addressing the nation’s challenges.
However, backlash from the public met her plea for calm. Many critics argued that her privileged lifestyle, as the wife of a prominent politician, distanced her from the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians. Furthermore, they questioned her ability to genuinely empathize with the grievances of those who took to the streets to demand better governance and living conditions.
In response to the mounting criticism, Regina Daniels acknowledged the disparity between her circumstances and other Nigerians. She expressed understanding towards the frustrations felt by those struggling economically. Also, she maintained her position that violence was not the solution and urged for peaceful dialogue and collaboration.
To further substantiate her point about the potential for the protests to escalate, Regina Daniels shared a video.
The video showed protesters in the northern region displaying a Russian flag.
She said,
“You see what is happening in the North? Holding the Russian flags. Is that what we want? Mind you, whatever happens in the North can get to you. I preached against violence, and ignorant Nigerians said it was because I am privileged or opportune.
“Yes, the fact remains that I am privileged and opportune, but that doesn’t stop me from understanding that my nannies need to be paid extra or stop me from understanding that my gateman or cooks need to be well catered for because of insecurity and extra bills to be paid in Nigeria.
“The point remains that Nigeria cannot be changed in a day, and not by one man. I am not speaking for the government; neither am I speaking for you people to love me because I don’t need it. I am just stating that obvious fact, and that’s the truth. The earlier we all realize that this protest is turning to something else, the better for us, and that’s it.”
“I speak as a proud citizen of this great country! We all want a great Nigeria,” she captioned the video.
