Benin Republic Defeats Super Eagles, As Nigeria’s Finidi George Fails

Super Eagles risk losing world cup qualification match | fab.ng

Big upset in African soccer! Nigeria’s Super Eagles, a strong team usually expected to qualify for the World Cup, is in danger of missing out for the first time in decades. The problem? A surprising loss to the Benin Republic, a much less-favoured team nicknamed the “Cheetahs.” This defeat dropped Nigeria to fifth place in their qualifying group. They desperately needed a win to stay on track, but Benin pulled off a shocking 2-1 victory.

Things are looking tough for Nigeria. They’re now four points behind the leader. That gap could widen to five points if another team wins their next match.

Victor Osimhen: Why Chelsea Might Be Skipping The Super Eagles Star

Victor Osimhen: Why Chelsea Might Be Skipping Him | fab.ng

Red-hot Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen was a major target for Chelsea at the beginning of the year. The 25-year-old has been tearing up Serie A with Napoli, racking up goals and becoming one of the most coveted forwards in Europe. With his talent, a summer exit from Napoli seemed like a sure thing.

However, those plans might have just hit a roadblock. Recent reports from The Athletic’s Simon Johnson suggest a change of heart at Chelsea. The Blues have a new manager at the helm – Enzo Maresca – and it appears his transfer priorities lie elsewhere.

This sudden shift in focus leaves Osimhen’s future hanging in the balance. While a move away from Napoli could still be on the cards, it looks like Chelsea won’t be his next destination.

So why is Chelsea skipping Victor Osimhen?

See the three possible reasons below:

Victor Osimhen, the highly-rated Nigerian striker for Napoli, looked like a perfect target for Chelsea earlier this year. However, there are a few reasons why the Blues’ interest seems to have faded.

Price Tag is Too High

Napoli secured Osimhen’s future with a new contract last year, which included a whopping €130 million release clause. This astronomical price tag is proving to be a major deterrent for Chelsea and other interested clubs.

Napoli seems unwilling to negotiate on the fee, leaving potential suitors with a tough decision: pay the premium or look elsewhere.

For Chelsea, adhering to Premier League’s Financial Fair Play regulations makes this price tag even more of a hurdle. The Blues need to be mindful of their spending, and Osimhen simply doesn’t fit within their financial constraints at this time.

Injury Concerns Raise Red Flags

Osimhen’s impressive goal-scoring record is undeniable, but his injury history might be giving Chelsea pause for thought. Since joining Napoli in 2020, he’s missed a significant amount of playing time due to various injuries.

Last season alone was a nightmare, with Osimhen spending over two months sidelined on five separate occasions. Even when he was available, he seemed to be constantly battling niggling injuries that impacted his overall fitness and performance.

This unreliability, despite his obvious talent, could be a major concern for Chelsea. After all, a top striker needs to be consistently available to lead the line and contribute throughout the season.

Exploring More Affordable Options

With Osimhen seemingly out of reach, Chelsea has shifted its focus to exploring other striker options. The key here is finding a player who offers good value for money.

Several names have been mentioned as potential targets, including Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig, Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting, Ivan Toney of Brentford, and Artem Dovbyk from Girona.

While these players might not possess the same level of raw talent as Osimhen, they would likely come with a much more manageable price tag. This would allow Chelsea to not only strengthen their attack but also allocate resources to address weaknesses in other areas of the squad.
