Nigerian filmmaker Cheta Chukwu has been chosen for the 2024 Torino Film Lab’s (TFL) Extended Writer-Director Programme in the Netherlands for his new project, “Love is a Deeper Shade of Red.” This recognition strengthens his position in the global film industry.
The TFL, based in Turin, supports filmmakers working on their first and second fiction feature films. It focuses on four main areas: training, development, funding, and distribution. TFL also provides networking opportunities through events like the TFL Meeting Event and other co-production markets.
The TFL workshop will be held in Amsterdam from June 20 to June 25, 2024. Also, subsequent online sessions over the next two months will follow.
Chukwu first gained fame with his comedy film “Payday” (2018). It is about two friends, Paul and Ortega, whose landlord dies just before their rent is due. They decide to use the rent money for fun until the landlord’s daughter, Yemisola, threatens eviction unless they pay within 24 hours. Nigeria received this film well, as did nine Francophone countries. Furthermore, it was distributed on Netflix and Amazon Prime.
Chukwu’s upcoming romantic comedy “Strawberry Chinny” will be featured in the Cultural Connections section at the Essence Film Festival from July 4 to July 7, 2024. The film follows Chinny, a Nigerian makeup artist. She moves in with her childhood best friend, Ifeanyi, after her boyfriend dumps her.
Chukwu recently completed “Adam Bol,” a comedy filmed in Kazakhstan and Nigeria. This move showcases his talent for creating cross-cultural stories.
Also, participating in the TFL Extended Writer-Director Lab offers Chukwu a significant opportunity to collaborate with other talented filmmakers. The programme includes notable script tutors like Anne Feinsilber (France), Ayman El Amir (Egypt), Chiara Laudani (Italy), Marietta von Hausswolff von Baumgarten (Sweden), and Isabella Weber (Italy).
