Fresh off her show-stopping performance at Coachella, Afrobeats superstar Tems just dropped a trailer for her highly anticipated album, “Born in the Wild,” due for release in May 2024.
The one-minute video is packed with nostalgia, following a young Tems growing up in the suburbs of Lagos with her mother. We see glimpses of her childhood spent playing in parks, hinting that the album might explore her journey from those early days to becoming the successful artist she is today.
The trailer itself is a bit of a mini-experience. There’s a strong feeling of looking back at cherished memories, with scenes of Tems’ childhood home and her mom in the kitchen. The music adds to the vibe; the trailer features a snippet of a new song called “Born in the Wild,” which could be the album’s title track.
But that’s not all! During her electrifying Coachella performance alongside Justin Bieber and Wizkid, Tems also treated fans to a taste of another new song from “Born in the Wild.” This one samples the classic 1999 song “Love Me Jeje” by Seyi Sodimu, a track many Nigerians born in the 90s will instantly recognise.
Taken together, the album trailer and the surprise performance of a new song point towards “Born in the Wild” being a deeply personal project for Tems. It seems like she’ll be reflecting on her life experiences and the cultural touchstones that have shaped her into the artist she is today.
The title itself, “Born in the Wild,” is interesting in light of the sample from Seyi Sodimu’s 1999 album “Born in Africa” where “Love Me Jeje” comes from. It could be a subtle nod to her roots and influences, or perhaps even a way of drawing a parallel between her own experiences growing up and the broader themes of the earlier album.
