British-Nigerian rapper Skepta is teaming up with rising Nigerian star Portable for a new Afrobeats song titled “Tony Montana.” This collaboration marks Skepta’s exploration of the Afrobeats genre, potentially connecting with his Nigerian roots.
The song, produced by award-winning JAE5, follows Portable’s “Tony Montana of London” EP, released earlier in 2024. Notably, Portable’s visit to the UK in the same year led to this collaboration with Skepta.
Fans on social media are excited about the single, particularly impressed by Portable’s contribution. His melodic chorus is a departure from his usual “hoarse street music” style.
“Tony Montana” is not Skepta’s first foray into exploring collaborations with Nigerian artists. Earlier this year, he released “Jangrova,” featuring Nigerian rapper Odumodublvck and British-Ghanaian actor Idris Elba.
Interestingly, Skepta recently made his directorial debut with the movie “Tribal Mark,” focusing on a British-Nigerian hitman. He reportedly decided to create this film as a response to discussions about casting a black actor for the role of James Bond.
“Tony Montana” serves as one of the lead singles for Skepta’s upcoming sixth album, “Knife & Fork,” expected to be released later in 2024. This collaboration and album anticipation mark a promising year for the British-Nigerian artist.
