In an exclusive interview with Shock Ng, Ella Emefiele shared the motivation behind her pursuit and production of this film.
She said,
“During my practice in Nigeria, I encountered numerous women, many of whom had undergone circumcision. I used to operate a medical centre, and these women confided in me about the challenges they faced due to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).”
Ella Emefiele also disclosed how someone close to her had shared the harrowing experiences of the procedure they had endured.
She stated,
“So when I got to the United States, I discovered that there was a procedure called clitoroplasty (FGM reconstruction). After this procedure, a circumcised clitoris can potentially regrow, allowing the victim to regain their sense of self. I then reached out to my friend and obtained her consent to share her story.”
“The Scar” is undeniably an intriguing film to mark on your calendars for October, as it serves as a platform to shed light on the pressing issues affecting women in Nigeria.
