“Vote True“, a three-minute short film released before Nigeria’s 2023 elections, won an award at this year’s Cannes World Film Festival (CWFF). This success highlights Nigeria’s growing prominence on the global cultural stage.
The founder of Telefectiv Productions, Toyin Elebe, specializing in documentaries, TV content, and feature films, received the Best Voiceover category award at one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals.
Directed by British filmmaker, David Symmon and released in January 2023, “Vote True” is a compelling political drama inspiring Nigerians to use their democratic power to change the nation’s course.
Narrated by Elebe, the film begins with scenes from Nigeria’s Independence Day in 1960, capturing the hope and enthusiasm of the young nation. However, it contrasts these with present-day struggles, including corruption, poverty, and insecurity.
The film introduces ordinary Nigerians determined to make a difference, showcasing their stories to demonstrate that change is possible.
Elebe is passionate about Nigeria’s potential and aims to promote African voices and storytelling globally to rebrand the continent. His win at the Cannes World Film Festival’s voice-over category is a historic achievement for Nigeria, and it underscores his talent and commitment.
Additionally, X3M Ideas Group, a leading creative agency in Nigeria, also won Nigeria’s first Cannes Lions International Festival for Creativity, signalling the rise of Nigeria’s creative industry. Elebe’s “Vote True” has earned several awards and nominations, further highlighting its success.
Elebe and Symmons plan to work on more projects through their Telefectiv production company, inspired by the success of “Vote True”. Their goal is to create films that tell untold stories and shape Nigeria’s cultural narrative, preparing audiences for a future full of potential.
