The Nigerian singer, Rema made history at the 2023 VMAs as he took home the prestigious award for Best Afrobeats Song, earning him his first VMAs after winning Best Afrobeats Song for his collaboration with Selena Gomez on the global smash single, “Calm Down“.
The 2023 VMAs honoured the best music across all genres and featured a wide range of brilliant performers at the Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey.

Rema defeated Davido, Burna Boy, Wizkid, Ayra Starr, Libianca, Fireboy, and Asake in a fiercely competitive category at the 2023 VMAs, which were held on September 12, 2023.
Rema praised Fela and other musicians whose work has influenced the development of Afrobeats during his victory speech. He praised the new wave of Afrobeats as well.
