Nigerian comedian Basketmouth has openly expressed his frustrations with the state of Nigeria’s economy and its leadership.
During his appearance at the African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA), Basketmouth addressed two major concerns in his interview. First, he emphasized the continuous rise in inflation. Then, he highlighted the rapid devaluation of the naira. He went on to explain how both issues are severely affecting the lives of everyday Nigerians.
He said,
“There’s nothing that can happen, quote me anywhere. Think about it, in 1970, the year I was born, it was one naira to a dollar and this year it’s one dollar to 1600 naira. There was never a time from that time to date that the dollar crashed and went back to what it was and stayed there. It has never happened; think about it.”
Basketmouth criticized Nigerians who say ‘E go better.’
“Every time it changes, all the conversations you’d be hearing is ‘E go better, E go better.’ it’s getting worse, bro. What are the policies? And what have they done? Now 100 pages for a passport is 100,000 naira; they just increased it,” he explained.
” ‘E go better. E go better’… It’s getting worse bro”
First, Basketmouth thinks the government deliberately created economic problems. As a result, he believes government leaders want citizens to leave Nigeria. Additionally, he pointed out that Nigerians use the term ‘japa’ for this situation. Specifically, ‘japa’ refers to when people leave the country to find better opportunities elsewhere.
“I suspect that our government planned this thing to make the Nigerian population suffer. So that when they suffer they can now want to japa, then they will increase the price of the passport and they’d make money,” said the actor.
Sarcastically, he added, “It’s not like I’ve given up hope; I’m hopeful. Maybe one day, the country will be better. Let’s all believe in that pipe dream. It’s done, it’s over.”

Controversial social media figure Verydarkman has refused to testify at a hearing after demanding the presence of transwoman socialite Bobrisky on the panel.
On September 30, 2024, Verydarkman appeared before the panel to substantiate his claim. This claim is that EFCC officials and the Nigerian Correctional Services had requested a bribe of N15 million from Bobrisky. They requested it to secure a VIP cell at the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre in Lagos.
However, when Verydarkman noticed Bobrisky’s absence from the event, he adamantly refused to answer the questions posed to him. A viral video captured the moment he vehemently declined to speak, citing Bobrisky’s non-attendance as the reason for his refusal.
“I don’t know why I will be here and the person who made these allegations is not here. In the voice note, Bobrisky said something about a godfather; maybe the godfather told him not to come and nothing would happen. He has disrespected this committee by not coming here and you are trying to force me to talk,” he said.
“You are already threatening me with arrest, that you will detain me, I will stay in the cell; it’s not my first or second time. I will stay there till he is ready to talk. If Bobrisky is not here, for now, I will not say anything, if I say anything, let me die,” he added.
The attendees at the hearing reacted to the declaration made by Verydarkman with audible murmurs of confusion.
This incident follows the release of an audio recording by VDM on September 24, 2024. In the voice note, Bobrisky claimed that unidentified EFCC officers extorted him for ₦15 million. This is to drop money laundering charges against him.
Furthermore, Bobrisky alleged that a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and his son intervened. The intervention was to have the charges dismissed and prevent his imprisonment.
